$10k for clothing

Anonymous
I think that’s more than I’ve spent in the 20 years but I guess I had to start from scratch it might only last me 10 years or so.

Is that a couple shopping trips? A couple years? 5-10 years? More?

Just curious.

Assuming I'm starting from nothing?
I'd use it to buy a timeless coat, bag and shoes. Should last 5+ years with proper maintenance

I would hope a “timeless” coat costing $5k+ lasts more than 5 years

I would allocate the 10k like this
- coat - 5k
- bag - 3.5k
- shoes 1 - 750
- shoes 2 - 750

2 pairs of shoes because you can't wear the same pair of shoes every day

That is insane- I am in my early 50s and I make 7figures and I would never spend $5k on a coat or over 1K on a bag. Ridiculous

It is truly wild. Clothes and accessories are like wine- you get to a certain price point and the increase in quality is entirely negligible in most cases. Certain fine jewelry would be an exception to this but $3500 (or like you say $1000) for a bag is irrational.

When I was working in the office I was spending about $2500 per year on clothes. So $10K would be 4 years worth of clothing. Now that I work from home it's probably like $1000 per year. My average dress is $200-$250. And I'm not a shoe person so only 2 pairs of shoes each year. I'm also not a handbag person either.

I make $320K per year and I spend the following on these items:

Coat: $400 once every 5 years
Bag: $250 once every 3-4 years
Shoes 1: $200
Shoes 2: $200

6 months assuming no bags or jewelry purchases.

My favourite pumps are about $800 a pair, wool blazers are about $4k each, trousers about $1.5k each, most of my dresses start at about $3.5k. Everything is 100% natural fibers and of course tailored to my frame.

We haven't really even gotten into accessories like jewlery, watches, handbags, scarves, sunglasses either.

“Pumps” lol. And “trousers.” Aka 80’s shoes and pants.

It sounds like a lot of money - but I think I spend $5k/year on clothes now, and I work from home. Things wear out, you need a dress for something, whatever - and I am not even a big $ spender. I get a LOT secondhand on Poshmark and eBay. But stuff costs money, it just does.

I don't understand how someone spends $1000 on clothes for a year. Don't you ever want a refresh or need something for an event, or just enjoy having something new to wear? I can see if you're living bare bones - or you've reached a stage of life where you have everything you could possibly want to put on for any occasion. But otherwise? Clothes and shoes are *expensive*!

Well this is obvious. Whereas you are actually pulling 7 figs(in theory), she's clearly not but wants everyone(the uninitiated poors, anyway) to THINK she is.

It's cosplay.

Let me know if you have any other questions.

Just casual wear? Maybe 10 years.

Including work wear? Maybe 3 years.

Don't know why you wouldn't believe this person. I've never spent that much on my wardrobe, but my relatives do... and they don't even work!

It’s fine with me but it’s pretty funny to me that you are claiming $5k a year does not make you a big spender.

I mean I don't spend a lot on individual pieces. I don't buy designer purses or anything like that.

Normally I'd say years, maybe a few years as I haven't bought much since pre-covid and everything needs replaced.

Lucky for me I work for an outdoors-y agency with no dress code, minimal time in the office and little interaction with the public. It would probably last until I retire in 10 years.

Some of us shop smartly. I just got a dress for a wedding that was $20 final sale. I wore some sparkly shoes I bought a couple years ago that were also on sale. I borrowed an evening bag from a friend. I am not the bride, so I don't need to spend a ton of money. My hair looked great, my outfit was good, and I had fun. No need to spend $600 on one night.
