How long would a $10k budget for nice work clothes last you?
Is that a couple shopping trips? A couple years? 5-10 years? More? Just curious. |
| I’m 48. I could probably make that last until I die. I don’t need much in work clothes. |
|
10k would not go far for me. My Max Mara Manuela coat is probably the cheapes thing I own, at almost $4k. My favourite pumps are about $800 a pair, wool blazers are about $4k each, trousers about $1.5k each, most of my dresses start at about $3.5k. Everything is 100% natural fibers and of course tailored to my frame.
We haven't really even gotten into accessories like jewlery, watches, handbags, scarves, sunglasses either. |
On the internet, no one knows you’re a dog. |
| Probably around 5 years. I do not spend a ton IMO, but there is always the random jcrew haul and replacement of larger items that adds up |
|
I'd say 10 years. With a big "but" that if I had to e.g. replace key outerwear, buy new suits, etc. then that year could jump up a bit. So I'd say my yearly budget for clothes/shoes is about $600-$800 with that contingency clause.
But I wouldn't count jewelry in that total, which for me is a different and much more one-off type of purchase. |
So at our my coffee. 😂 |

Thank you, I needed this laugh today. |
Assuming I'm starting from nothing? I'd use it to buy a timeless coat, bag and shoes. Should last 5+ years with proper maintenance |
|
$1000/year
But $2000/year seems equally as normal Assume 2 weddings a year. |
| That’s what I spend over about 18 months with wardrobe updates— new boots in fall, few new suits per year, few new work dresses, new swimsuit/underwear as needed, add-in pieces, specialty stuff for events, running shoes, etc. And I wear stuff until I wear it out, generally. |
I would hope a “timeless” coat costing $5k+ lasts more than 5 years |
I don’t understand this, aren’t the shoes and trousers clearly cheaper? |
This made me laugh |
