She is graduating in the Spring and her transformation over the course of her time at Loyola has been pretty amazing.

She has matured as a student - takes great pride in her academic efforts and seems to have an active social life.

My DD will tell you it’s a bar school vs a frat school. Im not sure I am a fan of either but I try to keep an open mind. My sense is that most if not all of the students have fake ids and the weekends are spent at different bars and clubs in both Baltimore and Towson. Granted that’s not everybody but I suspect a decent portion of the student body.

Our family went to dinner in Fells Point -it’s a nice spot - and my DD ran into a group of her friends.

While walking on campus she ran into some friends and others said hello while walking past. They were all polite and friendly.

I’d like to think she has had a nice college experience. I am happy with her education and the way she has applied herself.

I consider myself an advocate of Loyola Maryland after my family’s experience and I would encourage you to take a hard look.

Thanks for sharing are you from the area?

Did you have any scholarship aid? With merit, Loyola is only $10k to $15k more yearly than UMD, and for that you get a much more personalized experience.

My daughter received a L.U.M. grant from Loyola with her estimated financial aid. Does anyone know if this grant is need based?

For us, the price is nearly the same which for a kid that would benefit from a more personal experience, is very attractive.

Thanks for sharing. I am a new poster whose kid is also considering these two schools. I am interested in your comments about the social scene. How do kids meet and hang out other than the bar scene? My kid is a very sweet, little bit shy sporty boy. His idea of socializing is playing pickup soccer and then watching a football game with a group of friends. Never say never but it's hard for me to picture him doing the Fake ID bar scene. When we visited I felt like there was a very friendly low key social vibe at Loyola? Do you think this is a fit for my kid?

Different poster, but YES.

There is almost certainly club or intramural soccer. Kids meet friends at the gym. He should pick a social club -- maybe something service-oriented? I totally agree with friendly and low-key ... your kid would be fine.

Merit really depends on your kids grades and other factors like SAT. Take a look at the common data set for each school to see how much merit they award, if any, and if your kid’s stats put them in the top 25% of students. There are plenty of kids who receive no merit - more than those who do, but again, just google. Good luck!

You think non-sporty would be a no-go?

My son isn’t sporty and fits in there. He does go to the gym which is very nice.

I think both schools are welcoming for a wide range of students and being sporty is not required. My child is more on the artsy side and liked Loyola MD and St. Joe’s.

The Loyola grants are need based. My son has one.

Incorrect. They offer merit and need base
