Barnard vs Columbia women

She has zero issues with feeling “inferior” to Columbia women, but I also don’t think she’d care. Her social life is extremely vibrant (maybe too much so! Lol). She preferred Barnard’s campus (more closed), dorms and smaller classes. If Greek life is of interest to your DD, sororities are joint with Columbia and my DD loves her sorority and there are zero issues between the members who are CC v BC.

What's her high school GPA and SAT score? I think you have an idea whether she can get into Columbia.

I’m PP. My DD is a current Barnard student. The question was about Barnard girls’ experiences. For my student, 35 ACT 3.9 from a Big 3 and double Ivy legacy, this was the school she chose and she is happy with it. She did not apply to Columbia, but was accept at two Ivy’s that she declined. She tends to eat in Columbia dining halls and study in the Columbia library. Then she happily exhales when she gets back to Barnard’s campus. This is one student’s experience, no more and no less. Just providing OP with a perspective that is current and relevant.

You're a troll. For someone who is on DCUM and cares about Barnard vs Columbia (i.e. pretigious), this parent would not let her child to decline 2 ivies and chose Barnard.

BTW, why your DD applied 2 ivies when she definitely wanted to go Barnard? And Big3? No.

Young women love NYC.

Had one recent grad and a current student. No issues with Columbia women for them at all. First one got in off of the waitlist; second one was ED. Intermingle with Columbia women everywhere--sororities, clubs, friend groups, etc. My one that is in school had three meetings with Columbia women in DC who were down here studying. No issues--anyone that tells you otherwise is talking out of school.

this is simply not true! if anything columbia women envy that barnard women are like..... cooler and smarter? better freshman community building so the wheels are greased socially and everything sort of falls from there. if anything barnard students are often more self-directed/curious/intellectual as opposed to the head-down grindset that leads a lot of kids to ivys. i say this as a columbia woman! my cc classmates were nerds, often boring, had a hard time with ideas because they were trying to be right all the time and struggled with nuance or criticism (which is.... where real thinking happens.......). it's one school, with shared libraries and classes and dining halls, but everyone knows you have a better time at barnard.

the thing about gs is real though-- those students do get looked down upon. barnard students do not.

I would easily choose Barnard over Cornell or Dartmouth or even Brown and U Penn. Or even Yale.

My DD is at Columbia. She is at Barnard almost always, same as her male friends.

PP here with dd at Columbia. I agree with this. The Barnard girls seem to be somewhat more sophisticated and the men are often more intrigued with them.

Anonymous wrote:OP here- thank you, this is helpful. DD loves the idea of a small women’s college with all of the opportunities of a large research university…but not if there are going to be eye rolls when she opens her mouth in class.

This never happens. And if it does, the Barnard girls don’t notice or care. The communities are so integrated. Girls are active in pre-professional clubs, sororities etc and Barnard students hold offices in them all. This is not a thing. At all. Look at the IG pages for the Colombia sororities, clubs etc. Barnard students are well represented and NO ONE cares except parents here who have no idea what they’re talking about.

So...yes, there's a ton of integration. But the stereotypes re: Barnard women and perception of Barnard as not as "elite" is a real thing. It is probably true that some--even most--Barnard women do not care. But my DD finds it off putting. She still loves it there but it is a definite downside to the school.

Still an amazing place but better to go in with your eyes open...

My daughter is at Bryn Mawr and is taking more classes at Haverford. If this is an issue, I don’t think she’s noticed it. However, she did get a big merit scholarship at Bryn Mawr. Haverford does not give merit.

Yes. It is a real thing, unfortunately.
