495 and 270 have devolved into Mad Max land

A few examples will have an impact. Cars racing down 495 and 270 at 90 to 100 MPH weaving in and out of lanes should easily be seen by an undercover policeman. Doesn't matter what race the driver is -- and it's probably not even discernible until after they roll down their tinted window.

So you are suggesting profiling vehicles with tinted windows? That's illegal.

The PP was saying that if a policeman saw a car driving fast & recklessly, the policeman wouldn't be able to profile the driver because the policeman can't see the driver. Nobody suggested what you said, you misunderstood. I suspect you're touchy about your tinted windows?

That would be great if they were actually a deterrent. You think the guys racing give AF about those tickets?

If they raise insurance and eventually take licenses from repeat offenders it should help.

Impound the vehicle for a length of time. Vehicle not released until time has passed and hefty fine is paid.

This. Seize the vehicles, including motorcycles. Seize the modded cars and loud crotch rockets. Word would get out in these street racing "communities".

You can get dash-cams installed and start reporting these loons.

Also, speed cameras.

They need drones. Road drones capable of going 200 mph that are small and light to take radar scans and follow drivers going ridiculous speeds. MD doesn’t do traffic enforcement anymore, why his why insurance is skyrocketing.

Defund the Police - enjoying the results?

Police are spread thin with fewer staff. They are not focusing on traffic.

Pretty sure fairfax and moco never defunded police.

What about all the people on their phones? At high speeds too. I swear every time I see bad driving if I can look over and see, someone is literally typing on their phone, or facetiming

+1000

THIS - if you think 270/495 is bad then you’ve not seen 70. It is all you say and more. We need MD State drones.

The police ARE the criminals in this case. They often are same age as worst drivers.

Make this place like Germany - 6-9 month training - super expensive to license. Will stop many of the New American Yahoos.

Try again. Cops rarely ticket at rush hour even pre-pandemic. But I can’t believe the rapacious bureaucracy doesn’t want more bucks to fund its failures.

This is the thin blue line protest from George Floyd.

Try again. Northern Virginia courts aren't interested in these minor traffic infractions. They are going after real crimes instead.

Having worked and lived in 4 Latin American countries over the years, people in most countries drive like Mad Max. As more illegals come in, expect it to get MUCH MUCH worse.

Things started to get dicey approaching the American Legion Bridge. The road construction -- which I understand has been going on perpetually -- narrowed everyone down into a kind of funnel. Nevertheless, everyone was speeding. The semi trailer trucks were the worst offenders -- they were going 65-70 MPH and constantly wandering into my lane. I thought I was going to be hit on multiple occasions. Passing on the right was commonplace, as were seriously close tailgaters. I was driving 55-60 MPH just above the speed limit.

As I approached and got onto 270, the truck traffic thinned out, but it then appeared as though it was racing day for a bunch of young men in their race cars. No less than a half dozen times, guys in fast cars ranging from high end sports cars to souped-up rice burners were busting through traffic going 80-90 MPH, weaving dangerously between cars on the left and right like it was their personal slalom course. Several times they cleared my front bumper by just a few inches. At one point, I was in the far right lane, and one of these guys passed me on the right in the shoulder going about 90 MPH -- his car was bouncing up and down on the dirt as the shoulder narrowed and he swerved in front of me almost losing control of his vehicle. It was clear to me they were doing this deliberately.

My mind kept thinking: WHERE ARE THE POLICE? They were no where.

When I drove back home about 10:30am, I noticed several Transit Police vehicles on the road, and no more egregious racing.

So I have to ask: is there some kind of sweet spot early on Saturday morning that these guys know about where the police are not on duty yet which they exploit to behave like this? I'm just appalled that this isn't being regulated. Someone is going to get killed, and I'd rather it not be me or my family.

Don't drive like such a baby then. Grow up or get off the road.

Anonymous wrote:That area is really dangerous. I agree with everything you've said OP. I feel terrified to have my teens driving on 495 and 270 given what it's like and the lack of police enforcement.

People have become apathetic about how dangerous it is.

Who to make a complaint to about this? Our MD representatives?

These crazy drivers are WORSE when they see a student or new driver notice on the car. Never have I ever been passed on the right so many times as when doing driving practice with my teen.

Then get out of the left lane. Great that you don't kniw how ti drive properly and now teaching your idiotic ways to your protogeny.
