Any success hiring for afterschool pickup?

My DD and two friends (HS seniors) were hired by a family to do this. Only one girl babysat at a time but the girls traded off days and were able to sub for one another as needed. Seemed like a smart way to go ensure coverage.

I paid $25 an hour, guaranteed 10-12 hours a week but usually averaged 13-15. I think this is on the lower end but we're in upper MoCo and she lived relatively close by. She was 26, working towards her degree in something online. We've found other nannies on sittercity or care.com with success so don't write them off totally.

We found a recent college grad to drive my high school kid home from school a few years ago. I *think* we paid $20-25/hr but it was a while ago. It involved no childcare since the kid was 14 and only needed a ride. I never worried about the stranger aspect.

^school was 20-25 months each way so it was basically an hour a day.

I hired someone from my kids' elementary school. She worked in the cafeteria so was off at 2pm every day.

Casa Lala?

+1. There’s also a martial arts place nearby that does pickup for other nearby schools. Ask your school admin, they have to know who’s picking up each kid, so will know the aftercare providers that others in your school use.

This. I know plenty of families that keep their au pair for just this reason.

Anyone have luck in hiring someone to pick up thier kid from school, drive them home and watch them for an hour or two? How much did you pay if so? How did you get over nervousness about essentially a stranger driving your kids? We just ended our nanny share contract, and know most nannies do not want part time pay.

Check at the local High School for a Jr./Sr. girl to do that. Ask the guidance counselor to put up a notice for hire.

We have a nanny for this. We pay $30/hour and she has a guaranteed 25 hours/ week. School pick up through dinner time doesn’t get to 25, so she does a weekly date night for us and then every other Saturday. It’s been nice to not have to scramble for sitters!

I babysat a lot in college and never took these kind of jobs. One mom wanted me to hang with her kid for 30 mins until the school bus came - and to pay me for 30 mins - never mind she was 15-20 mins away and this was every day. You need aftercare or an adult that you employ as others have suggested. or pay very well.

Do you actually know any high school kids? This isn't the 90s. HS kids barely have time to sleep with all they have going on.

Only UMC kids. I know a few teens in my neighborhood who would like an after school job like that.

We hired a PT nanny. She did school pick up and got kids to their sports practices.

The best paid assistance.

Fast forward one of our college kids now helps out two families during the Summer in this capacity.

You need an Au pair who drives. Just suck it up and get one.

Not to mention parents are generally stricter around teens driving other kids around (and laws are stricter too with provisional licenses).

I agree that an au pair who can do dropoff and pickup would be the best solution if OP has space in the home.
