Any success hiring for afterschool pickup?

Anonymous
We're in a huge bind right now after our aftercare abruptly kicked us out on the first day earlier this week due to an error on their part. We are scrambling to find an alternative. Anyone have luck in hiring someone to pick up thier kid from school, drive them home and watch them for an hour or two? How much did you pay if so? How did you get over nervousness about essentially a stranger driving your kids? We just ended our nanny share contract, and know most nannies do not want part time pay.

What error? Your best bet by far is to beg them to reconsider.

It was an aftercare that would have picked him up for school and taken him to their center. In spite of me telling them and writing it down on all the forms, they went to the wrong school location, and after realizing the correct school location, told us it was too far away for them to manage.

There is no one who would be willing to work 5 hours a week every week who I would trust with my kids. I agree with pp- beg the after care provider

I see a lot of people asking for this and not a whole lot of takers. Everyone seems to think there will magically be qualified high school babysitters who are just dying for a pittance after school when realistically they all have their own homework, extracurriculars, or better paying part time jobs, or even just hanging out.

The only time I have heard of something like this working was a friend who paid a part time WOHM who was home at that hour to pick up her kid and keep her. The person doing the picking up was already there and didn't have to go out of her way at all. I think it worked, but it got awkward occasionally and everyone was glad when the arrangement ended due to a SACC acceptance.

OK, what other afterschool places picks up from your school? Start there. Ask the front office.

You aren't going to find anyone for this job. Keep looking for aftercare.

We have been searching around. Everywhere we have checked is full. People sign up for this stuff month and months in advance (as we did) and what's left are long wait lists with little movement. I really don't know what else to do.

Any chance your work will grant you temporary flexibility? DH did that for one of his employees. They worked out an alternate schedule until another option could be found.

Yes, thankfully our work is understanding and we have some flexibility and have just been doing pickup ourselves for now. But this is not a long term solution. It is going to become way less tenable as we both get into our busy seasons soon.

I hired a lady from sittercity.com last year to pick up the 2 oldest from school, help one of them with homework and then drop off whichever kid to next activity. I paid $25 an hour, guaranteed 10-12 hours a week but usually averaged 13-15. I think this is on the lower end but we're in upper MoCo and she lived relatively close by. She was 26, working towards her degree in something online. We've found other nannies on sittercity or care.com with success so don't write them off totally.

My aftercare center is brought the kids by a bus. It's already a stop on their route. They also pick up the before care kids.

I hired someone for around 15 hrs/week to do this - for much of the time she had another part-time job in the neighborhood so it worked well. I paid her very very well (including a transportation subsidy) and she stayed with us for 4 years.

Do you mind sharing how much you paid her and for the transportation subsidy?

I did this all throughout college. I’m still in touch with the family 30 years later. I still get together with the kid (now in his 30s) to hike with our dogs. Pay well and you can find a student to do this.
