His height, about 42 in., is on the chart, but he is not as tall as we would have expected based on DH's height and my height. It has been cause for concern for us, but we kept a food diary for our ped to evaluate and he is getting enough calories. He is otherwise extremely healthy. He is somewhat picky and I definitely wouldn't say he is a super enthusiastic eater (not one of those kids who eats 5 bowls of cereal or 3 hamburgers), but he eats an overall pretty healthy and decent diet. Without loading him up on sugar and saturated fat, I try to up the calories of his food to some extent -- e.g. adding olive oil to pasta, baked beans, etc..., making smoothies with lots of fruit and yogurt, lots of peanut butter.
We did bloodwork to have him tested for all kinds of possible issues and everything came up negative. I think at his next checkup (soon) our ped may refer us to an endocrinologist for further investigation, but he may just be a smaller, skinny kid. It's something I worry about a lot.
I'm the one with the almost 6 year old who is 42 lbs and 43 inches. I've been concerned since this is not the height I would expect give his parents heights (5'5" and 6') but my pediatrician didn't voice any concern and kind of brushed off my concerns. I brought it up again with her in the summer and she gave me the name of an endocrinologist to see just to alleviate my worries, not hers. My son ended up growing 3 inches this year (as opposed to 1 inch last year) so I thought I might wait and see how he does for a bit longer before I go to the endocrinologist. What tests could be looked at by the pediatrician rather than the endocrinologist? You said you did bloodwork. Another doctor mentioned checking thyroid levels. (He's otherwise fine, perfectly active, good appetite, weight is actually at a higher percentile than height.)
