Well that was the dullest/saddest DC fireworks display I've ever seen!

They have this thing called TV now. It’s kind of a rectangular box that can receive images from remote locations, and you can see what’s going on. You can even change what they call “channels”, with each one displaying different content.

By using this device last night, I could compare the firework displays of the two cities and see that New York did a much better job. I forgot to mention that this device has sound too, so I could also compare the music. I could also see that San Diego and many other cities also had better shows. Watching fireworks on TV is not a good way to evaluate displays. On TV they will show you them all at the same scale but in reality it really matters where they set them off from and what the vantage point is like both from the "official" viewing locations and throughout the city. Both DC and NYC set them off from barges in the water I believe but DC generally has better vantage points because it's a lower city so you have good views from many rooftops in the city especially downtown. In NY it's very location dependent. DC also has the benefit of the mall running along the river so the official viewing point has a huge amount of space with amazing views of the fireworks plus lots of places for live music. In NY it's harder to set it up like that though of course many people are able to see them.

Also the music you heard may not have been the music played for people in the cities -- you're just watching a canned production on TV. It's just not the same.

Back in the day they would get the Beach Boys or something, but they gentrified the whole thing and ruined it. I think they got tired of all the trash and drunkenness. It was a lot more fun though.

Even if you are watching the live display, you are not watching it live so you can't evaluate.

The TV broadcast of DC fireworks will feature the music being played at the "Capital Fourth" celebration over by the Congressional reflecting pool but most people in DC are not listening to that music. That production is put up primarily for TV.

Watching on TV is a fundamentally different experience than being in person.

It’s more than sufficient to be able to see that NYC’s were spectacular, and DC’s were mundane.

I was on a rooftop overlooking the Hudson and all anyone could talk about was how lackluster they were so maybe a bit shy of spectacular.

Those concerts were amazing but - wow! - so much drinking and drugs. It was never going to last.

Many moons ago we took the trouble of seeing the dc fireworks and it was so underwhelming we never went back. We will try again if we can have assurance it is longer and better.

The view on the mall was spectacular - pink and purple sunrise. I agree the mood was meh, and the fireworks too. Music would have helped.

I agree. Was on the Mall surrounded by hundreds of people, and I still thought it lacked something in comparison to other years. I've seen them on the Mall every year for the past 10 and this one was just Meh.
