Kid has a headache, takes Motrin? Yes, fine to go out.

Kid has a 102 fever, runny nose, pretty sick, but fever breaks with Motrin? No, stay home

How is this a debate?

It's a debate because one parent has to go to work tonight the other doesn't want to miss a BBQ

Seriously no one wants your sick kid at the bbq. It's not only selfish to expose everyone there to your kid's illness. It's selfish to bring a kid that feels crummy out to a bbq.

Not fair to the kid or the guests. Incredibly selfish bc you never know who is immunocompromised, pregnant, doing chemo, etc. No people shouldn’t hide in their houses, but if you have a kid with something do the right thing and spare everyone

If school would not allow your child then don't go.

But as someone else pointed out, the school/doctor definition of "fever" is no longer around 99. It's 100.4+.

And thats wrong too!

A fever is elevated from your normal temperature and after COVID we should all have a normal temperature for our kids since we had to take their temp every.single.day.multiple.times.per.day.

The 98.6 average was conducted in mid 1800s and is outdated. We know that average body temp has reduced by almost a degree to 97.5. A fever is technically 2 degrees from your normal.

My kid runs at 97.3-97.7. Anything over 99.7 is a fever for him. Low grade would be 99-99.7.

if they will be inside dont go.
fever in and of itself is only dangerous if your child seems unlike their normal self, however it is a sign of contagion. If the child seems fine and you can ensure they wont be inside with others i would not be concerned.

“Likely” not spread the fever isn’t a help at all to someone who can’t get whatever is driving that fever due to immunosuppression, “doc”

Kids aren’t always great about washing their hands, or not using their sleeves to wipe their runny noses, touching things, spreading germs in general. Given, a lot of adults aren’t good at those things either but there is no reason for a kid with a fever and runny nose needs to be at a BBQ. Maybe they’d be better places at the park with other kids battling snotty noses where people aren’t sharing food, in close surfers chatting, sharing the bathroom, etc.

If kid was good enough to go, they wouldn’t be given Motrin to start with.

Thank you! Snotty runny nose being wiped on chairs and tables and door handles.

Who has a thermometer that's accurate that decimal place?

No, stay home.

The fever means your child's body is trying to kill something off. Don't take a kid with a fever to a bbq and ruin 2 weeks of everyone's summer once they all get sick.

I am pretty lenient about taking my kids out and about with a mild clear runny nose or letting them hang out with other sniffly kids (esp in winter when it is nonstop). But fever, even very low grade, is a no go.

I get it’s a bummer to miss the BBQ but that is life. Kids get sick and you miss things.

Every thermometer we have in the house......?

No. Should be fever and vomit/diarrhea free for 24 hours without meds before attending events/places.

Up here. More like number 2, not super sick, acting like normal self but runny nose and low grade temperature that's better with Motrin

Under 100 and nose is not a faucet kid would be in school. So bbq is fine. Especially since outside.

Nonsense. You arent supposed to sebd a feverish child to school.

If Motrin is used to bring down fever, no.
