Is Juneteenth Just Another Work from Home Day?

Do you know why people with no connection to the military get Memorial Day off…or Veteran’s Day?

Memorial Day is to mourn & remember our military members who died serving our country.

Enslaved people built our country.

And then most people end up working at least half a day from home.

So is this really a holiday or not? Are we dishonoring the holiday by treating it as just another work day? I'm certainly not sitting back and reflecting on racial injustice when I've got a full email box from people pinging me on projects and upcoming deliverables.

The holiday came out of nowhere and came during the time of covid and so it’s not really ingrained yet into people’s mind as a federal holiday.Same thing happened the first 10 years or so of MLK day. It took a while for the day of service thing to start but now it’s the tradition of that holiday. In the same way Juneteenth will have to have a tradition associated with it for it to take hold.

This. It is a US holiday at my international company but I didn't realize it until mid-morning and I work with international teams. So I'll just roll out early.

No. They didn't.

Not all of it. Asians built the entire west. There were no slaves ever in California. Asians were the ones who were blasting through granite in the Sierra Nevada Mountains.

So typical of what you do during a kregular work day then.

Pretty much, and I’m very well paid. Jealous much?

You really need to educate yourself. Start with a visit to the Smithsonian Museum of African American History and Culture. It does a fantastic job in clearly laying out how inextricably interwoven slavery was with the economy of this country before the Civil War. It was THE engine that drove the economy, directly in the south and indirectly in the north.

There is a reason the southern states fought tooth and nail to preserve the institution of slavery -- their wealth and prosperity directly depended on the labor of enslaved human beings. (And make no mistake, the Civil War was a war to preserve slavery -- it wasn't about "states rights" as many of us were taught. The South Carolina Declaration of Secession cited "an increasing hostility on the part of the non-slaveholding States to the institution of slavery" and the fact that the US government had announced "that a war must be waged against slavery until it shall cease throughout the United States" as grounds for secession.)

Billable hours is the 21st century’s indentured servitude. The emancipation proclamation should be for you too, brother.

I'm a director with about 60 people in my group. I'm doing some work from home (which I'm thrilled about since I'm in the office most days now.) But every email is timed to send tomorrow. It's been drilled into my head that managers shouldn't communicate with their direct reports outside of office hours unless it's genuinely urgent.

And you need to educate yourself and learn about the history of the industrial revolution (and its inventions) which really built our country.
While enslaved people, including the Chinese out west, made definite contributions in building our country, enslaved people did not "build" our country as much as you'd like to imply.

They should have made the holiday on Monday or Friday

the real logistical problem is that its in the middle of the week. every other federal holiday is tied to a weekend. if it were the 3rd Monday in June, people would take a long weekend. A random Wednesday - I have stuff I have to get done.

My ancestors were slaves.

I was in the office teaching a technical course all day. I'm not going to sit around and "reflect on racial injustice" when I have actual work to do.

Not a holiday for my company.

I've noticed that emails are a tad slower today, but other than that, business as usual.
