Is Juneteenth Just Another Work from Home Day?

Anonymous
We get Juneteenth off and our organization's leadership sends out messages about how important the day is to commemorate the end of slavery, how much still has to be done to advance equal rights, etc.

And then most people end up working at least half a day from home.

So is this really a holiday or not? Are we dishonoring the holiday by treating it as just another work day? I'm certainly not sitting back and reflecting on racial injustice when I've got a full email box from people pinging me on projects and upcoming deliverables.

Is it a holiday for your company or not? If so, that's on you if you decide to work, just like if you were working on Memorial Day or MLK Day or whatever. If it's NOT a holiday, then you work or take PTO. This is not complicated.

My DH is certainly not treating this as a work from home day. He’s living his best life right now. No email checked.

I have the day off and am not doing a lick of work, nor does my company expect me to.

So typical of what you do during a regular work day then.

Most people? Why would most people work on a day off?

I’m working. AT work (we don’t WFH), just like any other day.

Yes, it's just another work from home day. I have worked every Juneteenth since it became a holiday. In fairness, this is true of a lot of holidays for those that work with ex-U.S. customers/clients. I think the only holiday that seems to be worldwide is Christmas and somewhat New Years. U.S. centric holidays (e.g., July 4 and Thanksgiving) can stamped on all the time.

The holiday came out of nowhere and came during the time of covid and so it’s not really ingrained yet into people’s mind as a federal holiday.Same thing happened the first 10 years or so of MLK day. It took a while for the day of service thing to start but now it’s the tradition of that holiday. In the same way Juneteenth will have to have a tradition associated with it for it to take hold.
