Book-turned-movie I can read with DD13?

I was going to recommend “Golden Compass.” The show is better than the movie. But it’s definitely fantasy.

I can’t get over deciding at 13 that you don’t like sci-fi or fantasy. She’s missing out on so many wonderful stories. No Ender’s Game, Lord of the Rings, the Shining, or Narnia? No Ray Bradbury or HP Lovecraft?

I feel like I’m like the anti-trans people. I just don’t believe that you can make a decision at 13 years old that you don’t like sci-fi or fantasy!

She’s NOT into sci-fi or fantasy, so no Harry Potter or Hunger Games, please! I’d love it if it were something coming of age or having to do with a teen girl or even a teen girl and her mother, but it’s fine if not. I can’t think of a single thing. Crowdsourcing hoping someone has a great suggestion that’s not mainstream. Thanks!

I suppose she wouldn't like Divergent series?

The movies are terrible, unfortunately.

Of course. But you can't get everything

OP here. I hear you. I’m not going to fight her this summer, I just really want to do this to connect and supplement her reading in a way she will actually enjoy.

Thank you so much, everyone! I’m compiling a list but I’m leaning towards The Secret Life of Bees because I loved it when I read it and suggested it immediately to my own mom! I had forgotten all about this book!

I recently watched Fried Green Tomatoes with my 14 year old and was so surprised by how much she loved it!

Is Bridge to Terabithia too “fantasy”? It just feels like there’s so much more packed into it, stuff a young teen girl could really get her teeth into.

I haven’t seen the movie, but I heard good things about it.

Mine really liked watching anything Jane Austen with me. The movies got her interested in the books. Pride and Prejudice was her favorite followed by Emma. Anne of Green Gables is another period book if she likes those.

For contemporary, she likes "To All the Boys I've Loved Before" so we will watch the movie soon.

She also liked the Book Thief and Wonder, but we have not seen the movies.

My mom did this with Emma and Sense and Sensibility when I was 13/14 and the 5 hour Pride and Prejudice miniseries.
