If you have horrible genetics (overweight mother & father & siblings) what should you focus on? Need to lose 30 pounds. Have been strength training 3x/week for 9+ months. Weights weigh 8-15 pounds. Have lost 7 pounds…..total. |

Calories alone don’t make u lose weight. You can eat too few and not lose weight. You can have low calories but high sugar and not lose weight. You can’t just track calories and lose weight. |

Well, your nutritionist is in the business of trying to sell you her diet plan, so of course she would say that.
Look--of course you can't gorge every night and then work it off every single day. But I credit my weightloss (and maintenance!) about 70% to exercise, and the rest to diet. I have a sweet tooth and eat something "junky" every single day - candy, ice cream, cookies, chips, whatever. But the rest of my diet is pretty clean - I eat an abundance of fruits, vegetables, and beans/legumes. I rarely drink alcohol, don't drink sugared coffee drinks, and generally don't drink my calories. Exercise has 100% increased my metabolism, so I burn more at rest. My exercise is pretty high intensity though (so not just walking + yoga). Plus, I'm a morning exerciser - and it's very hard to workout in the morning if I binge at night - so exercise is driving some of my food control. Plus, releases stress, frustration, and all that good stuff. Exercise is important beyond weight management, but I also credit it heavily in my own loss/maintenance. |

People who are on hunger strikes, or those who were put in concentration camps, or those who faced severe food shortages never lost weight. ![]() What's true is that most people who say they can't lose weight despite having a calorie deficit, are not actually eating a deficit over the long haul. And they're eating/drinking more than they think they are. |
True. My dietician friend said the same.
Eating less does more than exercise when it comes to losing weight. If you build muscle through weight lifting, for example, you may end up weighing the same because the fat goes away and you gain muscle. So consider if you want to focus on a number on the scale if you also want to build muscle. |

For me, doing enough exercise to really make a difference with weight loss is that I get too hungry and end up eating more then I burned exercising. It’s easier to eat less and exercise enough for good fitness and toning but not do too much cardio. |
