Yes vote R to gut public ed and make every school a Christian nationalist training ground! Oh and your taxes will still go up! |
The cost of living is one of the main drivers of the teacher shortage in our region. If you don’t have a higher income spouse you cannot afford to buy here and you can barely afford to rent on your own. |
I'll go even further... we could cut Gatehouse headcount in half and hire more better paid teachers, and everybody would be better off (except for entrenched unelected bureaucrats). |
They get paid for an extra 30 minutes per day. But this post is about raises, not pay scale. Special ed shortages mean they should get higher raises, in my opinion. |

And why does an fcps employee making 380k per year need a 4% raise? How have they bettered our children? |
|
These....don't seem like terrible salaries for people who only work 80% of the year.
https://www.fcps.edu/sites/default/files/media/pdf/FY2024-teacher-195-day.pdf My niece just started an entry level consulting job making $85K and is probably working 50-55 hour weeks. Adjusted for a full year's salary, a first year teacher without a master's degree working the same number of hours during the school year is making $76,000. And yes, I'm adjusting for having the summer off. I would love to have the summer off!! |
| Election years are so fun. |
My last few years teaching in an ES I was working 50-55 hours a week. It’s a reason a retired a few years earlier than I had planned |
Please share your list of evaluation criteria. On what would teacher raises be based? |
I doubt that your niece has to do with the same level of stress that teachers do. It’s not just about the hours or pay. Teachers have never received a great salary, but now after decades, there’s a mass exodus. There’s other reasons. |
I’d also be curious to hear what this person who has no teaching experience thinks is the appropriate criteria. |
So you got a one percent raise this year and teachers have had paystub freezes for multiple years. What’s your point question? If you worked a job that had 192 day work agreement then you would have summers off as well. Again, what is your point? |
The employees at gatehouse are not on the teacher scale, and someone already mentioned sped teachers get an adjustment. So these different salary scales are already out there. |
Dp they work an extra 30 minutes per day? |
A first year FCPS teacher with a bachelors degree makes 56,011 and is working 50-55 hr weeks. Even if you account for time off they are making significantly less than your niece. I'd argue we need to change the economic incentives so society has more teachers and fewer consultants. |
