Some Fan Fiction is shockingly good!

I’m 50 and also recently found HP fan fiction. Fantastic writing, once you’ve sorted through the drivel. The one thing I sometimes find off putting is that the sex written by 20s/30s is not as liberated or female-centric as I’d like. Too many bjs and focusing on _his_ pleasure imo. The best exception is the Mortifying Ordeal of DM in love.

But it’s an interesting cultural phenomena and gives an anecdotal peek into the sex lived of younger generations.

Can anyone explain the appeal of this Draco/Hermione pairing? Why does it seem to be so popular?

I think it is because it’s a pairing that has built-in tension, the allure of reforming a bad boy, and the fact that it’s a pairing that would really let Hermione’s ambition shine- no more being a supporting character in Harry’s story.

I’ve always assumed it’s the same reason all transgressive relationships and art forms are popular in fanfic — you can’t publish that kind of thing without the purity police coming for you, but people like fantasizing about it in a safe way (yay fiction) so it gets posted on ao3 so people who like it can find it and the people who don’t can easily avoid.

I haven’t read HP fanfic since high school but I’m glad people are having a good time — that’s what fandom is about!

Yes! Fangirl is absolutely pitch perfect.

In the Potter fandom, you might enjoy Cartographer's Craft, by Copperbadge/Sam Starbuck, and pretty much everything else he wrote. He is very, very good.

I asked this question and spent all of today reading the mortifying ordeal story and I get it now..Hermione is relatable and Draco starts out stoic and unable to love (shades of Mr. Darcy) before coming around to her unique qualities. The slow burn up to the unbelievable eroticism..
Anyway my husband had the time of his life tonight and will never know the reason!

Newbie here but curious. Does “HP fan fiction” refer to Harry Potter ? (Or is it a reference to porn???)

Several reasons. Certainly the bad boy thing PP mentioned. Dark romance is popular for a reason.

A LOT of people hate Ron and Hermione together. They don’t make sense. And people wanted to see a redemption arc for Draco because he got some character growth in canon but not a huge amount. Fanon Draco is so much more complex.

Some of it is also because fans love Tom Felton and they still want to see him end up with Emma. Especially once interviews came out with Emma saying she had a huge crush on him, and Tom saying he’s always loved her. So Dramione is their fantasy pairing.

And honestly, there are many different pairings I’ve enjoyed only in the fanfic world. There really are some great writers out there who have been able to convince me and make me swoon. One of my favorites is Neville and Pansy. And if you’re really adventurous…try Dreomione (Draco/Theo/Hermione).

If anyone had specific Snamione recs, I would love to hear them!

I could give you an insane number of recs but there are so many tropes that it's hard to pick fics for other people. Snamione can be a lot like Dramione. It appeals, OBVIOUSLY, to those who can accept Hermione being attracted to a much older man (around 38 vs. 18, where magical people can live to be 150-ish). Sometimes this obstacle is overcome through the use of time travel among other interesting means. Since Snape dies in the real books, these tend to be "fix it fics" with a lot of non-canon plot.

I am going to list a few of the more unusual ones because they stick in my mind.

If you Google for fics you will find many reviews and summaries to find exactly the plots that make the most sense to you. I like all the fics below, but for different reasons. Many are quite novelistic. Most of these are on the more romantic than smutty side because these are highly plot-driven stories.

I hope you enjoy these:

I’m 45 and I read lots of fanfic 20 years ago - Buffy and some slash fan fiction. Haven’t read any in at least 15 years, but I remember the authors being amazing!

Thanks for the links. I’m inspired to try some of these out.

I remember thinking some of it was phenomenal. So well written, creative, and I read a few that were novel length. I remember thinking that they could change a few names and sell it to a publisher and no one would even know it was related to Glee.

I had a Twilight fan fiction phase

I was deep into NSYNC fanfiction

Anonymous wrote:There is an HP fanfic I'd love to read again. The Golden Trio is the Dark Trio The one scene I remember in particular has McGonagall noticing that people get hexed when Hermione is around. It was so well done and there's so my HP fanfic out there that I haven't been able to find it again.

"The sum of their parts"? It is better written than some top rated Harry Potter fanfics.

OP back.
I am, of course, following the news, but it’s freaking me out.

So, in last few weeks I’m back to reading Dramione fanfic.

Here’s a cute one (smutty - absolutely NOT for kids!)
