Some Fan Fiction is shockingly good!

I went through a BTS fanfic phase, primarily through AO3. Some of them are really good, have playlists, mood boards and YouTube trailers.

I'm convinced that whoever wrote the Fantasy Seventh Season of West Wing actually wrote for the show.

there's P&P fanfic? Can someone drop a link to the good ones?

I never heard of this. Where can I find it?

There's so much out there that's actually published.

I adore Claudia Gray's series, which has all the characters from Austen's books interacting and imagines a second generation. I think the lower ratings on goodreads are because the writing style is like Austen's. They aren't fast reads.

There's a series that expands on Mary Bennet's character that I found entertaining:

AO3 is THE place for free fan fic, of course. Here's everything tagged Jane Austen:

P&P specifically:

Yes it is. I loved the HP fanfic that cropped up 10-15 years ago. A lot of it was better written than HP (as JK Rowling desperately needed an editor/take some notes after book 3). Some authors later became published authors.

In particular, I loved “Maya” and several of her series that take place in an alternate universe (ones that I remember really clearly we’re an entire series rewrite where Draco is sorted into ravenclaw instead, and another short story collection where Draco stays a ferret for awhile.) “Maya” later removed all of her stories and there are rumors as to who she is (presumably a published author), but people saved them so you can easily find them by googling “The Complete Works of Maya”

There was also an author who rewrote the books from the point of view of Hermione (which I’m sure was a popular theme), and it was extremely well done. And then another author who wrote a new version of the story, from the POV of hermione, starting around book 5. The name is escaping me for both of these.

OP, my path to fanfic mirrors yours! I started with manacled after seeing a lady on tiktok absolutely WEEPING after having finished it. I read HP a decade ago, not exactly a super fan at all, plus I hate reading heavy topics, but her review was so compelling that I gave it a try. I was blown away! Then DATMOBIL, which for me is my best book of 2024 and it’s only May. I cannot believe this genre is FREE!

For me, Dramione is so impactful because it’s centered around Hermione - the best part of HP. Her character in canon HP is great, but experiencing it fully flushed out in fanfic is transformational! None of the fanfic is kid appropriate, but honestly I can’t wait for my daughter to eventually read it because she’s such an amazingly strong character that every woman can identify with.

I write ACOTAR fanfiction, and if anybody in my real life ever knew the smutty and kinky scenes I write I would die of embarrassment!

There is an HP fanfic I'd love to read again. The Golden Trio is the Dark Trio The one scene I remember in particular has McGonagall noticing that people get hexed when Hermione is around. It was so well done and there's so my HP fanfic out there that I haven't been able to find it again.

OP here- and oh wow, I really had no idea that the “genre” was so wide-ranging! Apparently I have been living under a rock….

Now I want to re-watch the west wing so that I can read the “final season”… and go find some pride & prejudice fanfics.

I too embarrassed to tell anyone in real life about Dramione, but I knew that the (thankfully anonymous) DCUM commentariat would be knowledgeable and have great suggestions!

I liked a published novel about the Bennett servants...Longbourn by Jo Baker.

OP here.

The Dramione fanfic I recommended in the initial post (Bloody, Slutty, and Pathetic) was just completed yesterday. The author is so insanely talented (and funny!), and I still highly recommend it - If you don’t mind some smut

https://archiveofourown.org/works/52884502/chapters/133769302

As noted by a previous poster, it seems that a lot of fanfic is written by younger people (20’s & 30’s) for young people. The epilogue to BSP made me feel… suadade (sorry, there is no functional word in English for the feeling, but luckily Portuguese has one!)

This stuff about marriage and kids growing up hits differently, I think, when you are in your 50s. In my 30s I would’ve been like “that’s nice,” whereas in my mid 50s it makes me feel almost painfully nostalgic for the craziness/high emotional intensity of youth and kids growing up (“the days are long but the years are short”).

I continue to find it interesting that that a fanfic can be more emotionally affecting than proper professionally edited “literature.”

Ok, just had to get that off my chest, since I can’t admit to anyone in real life that I read it!

Thanks for starting this thread OP! I’ve already read the two completed works you mentioned in your first post and will try out Bloody, Slutty, and Pathetic next.

If anyone had specific Snamione recs, I would love to hear them!
