How to handle disparaging comments about me?

Yes this. Or make a silly joke.

Or, maybe, just maybe, the "can she keep up" was the silly joke.

Where is OP?

Why are you the one who walks slow because of the MIL? Shouldn’t it be the DIL who makes any accommodations? I would start walking with the rest of the group at your own pace.

You walk slow for MIL?

they want to hike but MIL points to you and says we can’t because ( op) is too slow?

MIL is a cnt.

A little more context is needed. Are you a slower walker at the back trailing with MIL?

If not, wouldn't you just be in the mix and group with all the women?

I don't understand why she would think you would be slower or have a hard time keeping up? She is just one person in the group and not related to you so there wouldn't be a reason for you personally to hang back with her unless you are also her speed.

"Hey, I'd love to go for a hike, and I'm laughing because I thought I was slowing down for Madge's sake and it turns out she was slowing down for mine. Next time, we're going to race each other!"

I like this approach the best. But going forward, I would definitely not stay back with the MIL.

You need to challenge the old lady to a race and put $1000 on the line. Dead serious.

This just proves that women never grow out of middle school.

Are you fat?

Ugh please no.

This isn’t funny or cute. It’s weak and pathetic.
Just hit reply all:

“ thank you for your concern, but I’ll be fine with a hike. When?”

Don’t feel obligated to make everyone feel better. They f’ed up, not you.

Nah society needs more fat shaming. Americans are too fat these days.

+1. So confused why you would be walking slow for someone else’s MIL.

I completely understand your frustration. This kind of thing would make me so upset but people who are saying to not focus on that are right. Let it pass and just respond that you'd love to go for a hike.
