What does a chic 40yo Sahm look like?

Anonymous
But it's ugly

What is that retching sound...oh, that's me.
Who cares about this shit...I mean, really?

Yes you can wear it. and yes, it will make you look horrible as the pictures indicate.
Rule of thumb: if the models look bad, you will look worse.

Why be so mean over such an innocuous question? Do you have children and do they share your same aggressive and hateful personality traits? Oh and BTW, be aware that simply being contrary is not proof of intelligence.

Not the PP you are referring to, but I get her point and don't think she's being mean. She's expressing the disgust many of us feel when we see these stupid subject lines. Any 40 yr old woman still worrying about whether or not she's chic needs to get a life. Do you read Seventeen, too? Will you pass on your shallowness and obsession with appearance to your children? That's making the world a better place.

Your comeback is pretty defensive and mean, so get off your high horse.

NP here, and going to try and ascribe some good intent to the OP, as opposed to some of the ugly posters. I've never been good at fashion -- lived through college and law school in jeans and baggy sweatshirts. Never quite had the right things in my closet to assemble into cute outfits for dates or nights out with friends even in my 20s. Always envied those girls and women who seemed put together, not necessarily high-price fashion, but "chic" or "stylish".

Now as I close in on 40 myself, I'm still trying to figure out what is both age-appropriate and put together.

fwiw, I'm also not tall and skinny. I'm 5'4" and "average" -- ie a 6 or 8. Could lose 5 or 10lbs to look more toned, am not fat, but clingy leggings definitely don't work on me! If you were me, what would you wear?

Good question, OP.

People really spend $48 on a Vince tank top?

I think what takes an outfit from passable to chic is accessorizing.

For example, you put on a black v-neck, dark denim jeans and a 2-inch heeled black boot. You look passable for most casual events, for a Friday at work, etc.

To look chic, you would need to add something that shows your personality - a beautiful scarf or belt, colorful bag, funky necklace and bracelet, statement shoes.

Or/and, you would choose those classic shapes but punch them up with color or texture.

Most women you think of as chic follow this formula. Think of Michelle Obama - she is touted as extremely chic, but wears simple sheath dresses, cardigans, a-line skirts and pumps/kitten heels. What she does is wear these in colors that are flattering to her skin tone, then add a cool belt, amazing earrings, etc.

It really is that simple - accumulate basics that fit you well, then focus on amazing (not necessarily expensive) extras that are you.

If a thread title disgusts you, don't traumatize yourself by reading the thread.

OP and other posters didn't say they are "worrying" or obsessing about lookng chic.

Why is it shallow to look good? Some people enjoy looking good and some don't care how they look. To each her own, live and let live.

Neither outfit is appropriate for a 40 year SAHM - too trendy, both trying too hard. Fine if you're in your twenties.

Even SAHMs are not dumb enough to pay $1,000 for a cotton jacket and jeans!
