Aren’t mafia families for the most part a thing of the past? Even on Sopranos they don’t want their kids going into the mob and future generations will be college educated like Meadow or head to military school like AJ. |
It’s not a thing of the past. It still goes on quietly |
Dh is from Staten Island/nj. |

Tony Soprano had a meeting and ate at an Indian restaurant. Tony also loves Chinese takeout (orange peel beef specifically), as well as he and Carm's special place was a sushi place. Tony B went into to business with a Korean immigrant. So there are POC where appropriate... the show takes place in suburban NJ and NYC... so reflects their realities. |
| Such a great show. Gets better ever time I watch it. It is a totally accurate depiction of NY/NJ. I grew up there. |
He also did business with Jews and Arabs and Hispanics. It’s very indicative of NJ and what Italians say about each group (including Sicilians!) Italians take lots of pride in doing crime quietly and not doing “random crime” . |
| We loved it the first time around. May need revisit. |
My college pal was from Staten Island. She never said her family was Mafia, but she casually said the mafia would watch their house for them when they were on vacation. |

The thing no one talks about is that Tony’s mother has borderline personality disorder. That actress is brilliant.
They never mention BPD in the show. I recognized the behaviors because Tony’s mother did stuff my mother did. I read an interview with the actress, and she confirmed she was aiming for conveying a borderline. I felt seen. Two thumbs up for this show. I might need to watch it again. |

While not that old (right?), it shocks me on rewatching to me in the pilot when stand-alone DVD players are a high-dollar item.
That mob-boss screenplay would have been a breeze to finish with AI. |
You're really obsessed with this, aren't you. Normal people don't think this way. BTW, theaters and actors have been casting against type forever. It's a common trope for Shakespeare, for example. Men used to play women ALL the time since women weren't allowed to act on stage. Is that what you're yearning for? What a bizarre fixation you have. |
Me too. Lived in the next town over from the Satin Dolls club (the “Bada Bing” IRL). One of the reasons I love this show is because it really captures 90s North Jersey to a T. |
I’m just watching the show for the first time, and the psychiatrist actually does suggest this to Tony. She reads him a description of the disorder and he freaks out and storms out of her office. |

I think Nirvana’s music holds up well.
Interviews with Kurt are cringey. He was a jerk in a lot of ways. |
