This looks like a mix of colleges that should impress and ones that definitely do not. So it looks like students are probably a mix in terms of academic success from a nationwide perspective. I entirely understand how this is leagues ahead of most DCPS high schools.

Anecdotally, this year I know of acceptances at Cornell (full ride), Yale, and the AU full ride people showed up at the school for a public announcement a few weeks ago. My Banneker student is not in 12th so that's all I have confirmation of so far this year. Can try to find out more.

Add Dartmouth (ED) and a GWU full scholarship recipient.

Do you want your kid to go to a historical black highly academically intensive school with tons of homework and less “traditional” HS culture like sports? Or do you want your kid to have a more traditional and flexible experience in a less academically focused culture?

I agree I wish the gentrifiers could understand this concept.

I don't want my kids in the kind of high-pressure context where everyone is trying to get into elite colleges. "Some kids are going to elite colleges, some aren't" isn't just better from my perspective than most DCPS high schools, it's actually ideal.

Zero Howard or Morehouse on that list? That can’t be right.

Also interesting to see 17 CUAs. That is a strong pipeline!

Remember too that these are kids that prefer HBCUs and don’t likely have giant 529s. So you’re going to see colleges like NCCU that may be unfamiliar to you instead of the lower ranked SLACs that you’d see at white UMC schools.

Also what’s up with no UMBC?

What is CUA?

No one going to Engineering or Tech schools which is unfortunate. STEM is a great way for lower income kids to get good high paying jobs after college graduation

But not everyone has the math background to apply. If you haven’t taken Calculus, engineering programs won’t even consider you.

Will also add most Latino students stay local because it is not the norm to go very far for college so many would not even consider applying outside of the Metro area.

Also, that's not a comprehensive list. It was a list of preliminary commitments to attend, not a list of college acceptances; and when it was printed students were still deciding among offers, financial aid packages, and waiting to see if they were coming off of waitlists. Roughly half of the graduating class is represented here.

CUA is Catholic University.

Yeah I had that thought too. Banneker sounds exactly like what a prestigious (in my mind) HBCU feeder would look like, and I was surprised that there were several of the low profile HBCUs (A+M types) on here instead. But I would totally believe it’s about when the application/acceptance cycle caught this list.

you missed all the A&Ts on that list (because you are unfamiliar with them)
