Can someone explain the allure of Nordstrom Rack (and other discount stores)?

I get why people like to go, but I do find it overwhelming. Especially when you think about all that junk that will eventually end up in a landfill somewhere, and realizing all the energy it took to ship it from China. It’s a lot.

Agree that Nordstrom Rack is not what it used to be (and not as good as Filenes used to be), but back in the day I used to frequent the Nordstrom Rack on State Street in Chicago and it was truly amazing. I still have clothes I picked up at that store.

Nah. That's Ross you're thinking of.

+1 Ross and the aforementioned Burlington are gross compared to Nordstrom Rack.

The Nordstrom rack on L St is a great place to buy sunglasses imo. There are always a ton and it’s easy to go through them and try on.

A lot of the stuff Nordstrom Rack sells is made just for Rack, it's not just stuff that didn't sell at regular Nordstrom. It's why a lot of it feels like crap.

Every once in a while you find a deal or a hidden treasure. It’s the same thrill of the hunt as people who like thrift stores and garage sales. You don’t go to look for a specific item, you just “see what’s there”.

I used to work a block away from a Nordstrom Rack and it was a fun diversion at lunch time to go for a walk on a nice day and pop in to look for 10 min. I found something to buy maybe 1 out of 8 or 10 trips.

Me too! I used to work by the shady grove NR- the Theory Rain Jacket for $79 was my best find ever!! I wore it for 10 years!

For less than $35 I got $200 worth of Baby Boden (that had the original prices still on it). But that doesn’t happen every time. You need to know when to time the shipments.

Imagine being this gullible. They put fake tags on inferior B-grade and defective crap.

Not the Boden stuff. That comes from the clearance racks at Nordstrom which sells a lot of Mini/Baby Boden. You just have to get lucky and arrive at the Rack when it's just come off the truck.

I like to by NYDJ jeans at Nordstrom Rack.

Some of the Racks are just like a TJ Maxx while others are associated with a local Nordstrom and those are the ones you want to go to.

Although I don't go often anymore, I have had good luck at the Rack on 12th St. I purchased a $200 Rebecca Taylor tweed dress from there that has held up for several years. The Rack in Gaithersburg is not too bad either, but there is tons more junk at that location.

I don't consider Rack and Marshall's on the same level. Marshall's is pure junk these days.

These secondary stores and outlets used to have actual brand merchandise that didn't sell, so you could find wonderful things. That's no longer the case but people are still approaching it that way.

I can’t afford Nordstrom and other high end department store brands. Actual quality fabrics and well cut clothes are no longer in reach for the average middle class person. Even most of the stuff at the actual Nordstrom is polyester crap. It’s all the same stuff from China, at least if I shop at the rack I’ll occasionally find a gem. I also shop secondhand on Poshmark and website.

People who have such stores near their work or kid's school, tend to go there often during free hour and sometimes find quality stuff at a fraction of its standard value. They enjoy a short distraction and some walking steps away from the office or home.

+1 When there was the only one around here at Potomac Mills I used to go twice a year just for that.

This was me at Lord & Taylor. I think they thought I was stealing, because I wasvthere every day, but rarely made a purchase, if I did it was underwear on sale.
