Are Catholic privates less flaunty about wealth vs independent privates?

Our parochial school has several families with collection of small old convertible porsches, ferraris, etc. so don't worry about being the smallest, oldest car in the pickup line.

Seriously though, we drive an old minivan. It works for us. Nobody cares.

Of course nobody is literally going to mock you to your face. But how can it not make you feel a little uneasy and less than to drive an unstylish older car in a sea of new luxury SUVs.

A sea? Really? Which school?

Which school would this be in your hypothetical?

We play: Guess which Catholic school stickers will be on that Suburban passing by.

I saw one double-parked on Wisconsin the other day. The guy in the driver’s seat was wearing a yarmulke.

You sure he wasn’t a bishop?

This is DC. You have people who like to flaunt the things they possess (cars, homes, clothing, vacations, etc) — which isn’t the same as wealth by any stretch — and others who are discreet. Both of these types exist at every school.

I wouldn’t.

I wouldn’t either. But then you and OP seem to have a lot more of your sense of self tied up in what you and other people drive.

What are done if these schools? Mercy? Little Flower?

I agree with others! Please name the schools and/or geographic location. Bethesda? Potomac? Chevy Chase? North Arlington?

This is a really useful and thoughtful thread. Kudos to the OP for getting it started and everyone for sharing. Please keep all the great information coming!

^ I agree this is a pointless thread. This is a private school forum of Nova parents, DC and MOCA parents. Catholic or not, most people on this thread have a “nice car”

not our family - we actually have three!

Our family had two hybrid cars. Sorry, no Tesla, BMW, MB, Ferrari, Audi. God providdd us with virtues😉

Our Catholic K-8 is in PG county and the cars are big, mostly minivans because the families are big with most having 3 or more kids at the school. I don’t see anyone flaunting wealth, just a lot of tired looking parents at drop off and pickup. 😆

Because it doesn't really matter? If your older, unstylish car is well-kept, people are less likely to notice it than if you have a brand-new luxury SUV. Many non-luxury cars are nondescript and just fade into the background.

No, in a word. They are every bit as showy. I went to a rural Catholic high school full of BMWs in the student parking lot, dads with mistresses, and moms getting new noses and lipo every year.
