WP article on salon pricing.

That's awful. They definitely should have said something about the price increase ahead of time. Mine went up $15 ($75 to $90 for a cut), and I thought it was wrong they didn't say anything.

I found this article to be very interesting. As somebody who only gets a very basic haircut (no blow dry) three times a year, I’ve seen the price skyrocket. It cost me $95 because my hair is long (I get long layers). I don’t understand why it costs more to cut my hair because it’s long. It doesn’t take any more or less effort than somebody who has shoulder length and above hair. So how much are all of you paying who most likely get more done to your hair than I do?

You have more hair to cut. More hair = more time to cut

I’m not trying to be combative here, but 2 inches is 2 inches regardless of whether the hair is mid back or above shoulder.

Not the same. Is your hair thick and full of volume. Totally different than someone who has really thin hair. No good stylist just cuts across. They start at nape of neck and move out. If you have more volume aside from length it takes longer.

My salon went from $120 just to one-color touch my roots at crown of my head (no blow dry) to $140 since September.

I agree that $100 haircuts are ridiculous. My hair is so simple about an inch below my shoulders, blunt cut across the back (a 6-year old could do that) and a few face-framing layers.

I now stretch my haircuts out to 5-6 months because it kills me to pay that much.

Meanwhile my teens (16 & 18) that are in the chair for 30 min and have way more elaborate cuts---razor comes out, layers, etc. pay $37. That is the adult male price, not kid's price.

I never pay the $50-60 blow dry. Never. I go in every 5 weeks for a one-process root touch up which is now up to $130. I WAH so I don't care. I just tie it up and go. It saves me time too--not sitting in the salon.

I grew out my pixie during Covid and decided ded to keep it longer because the cost of regular trims *tripled* at my salon when they reopened. A haircut that requires a trim every 6-8 weeks makes that insane. I have always been happy to pay for quality salon service (it's not like my place was cheap before) but that just feels like throwing money away. I'm not a television personality or something. My hair looks great short but oh well.

Also the skyrocketing costs of color hane me re-evaluating that too. I used to experiment a lot with color (easy and fun with short hair) but it doesn't make sense anymore. Now I'm growing out my grays with some blended highlights to soften the line.

The irony here is that I used to be a salon's dream customer -- 10 or so cuts a year plus regular bleach and tone multiple times a year, and I'm adventurous so my colorist used to love me, I helped her build a huge part of her book with a willingness to try things.

I know spend a fraction of what I used to and that will decline further as my grays grow in. I've learned to tone it at home using high quality products. Now it's two very basic cuts a year to maintain a lob, and will soon be no color at all. Spending thousands less than I did when services were less expensive.

$350 every 5 weeks it is insane.

Single process color $250
Gloss
Cut
Blowdry
Eyebrows colored.

We can easily afford it and I know it's a luxury and absurd.

I no longer get my nails done professionally, in my mind that helps offset the cost.

The salon I go to is closing in September, I will do my own when my person retires. And I will truly miss my stylist as she and I have been together for 30 years. She is a lovely person and I will keep her in my life.

I am a pain in the neck and she put up with me all these years. LOL

My colorist complains to me regularly about how she feels undervalued by other clients and she’s changing her fee structure and adding “value add” services like massage and what not to increase her income.

Bottom line - it’s a low paying field. Maybe the days of making good money as a hairstylist are over.

This. I started doing my own hair during Covid. I can’t tell any difference between now and before. I watched a ton of you tubes on DIY highlights during Covid. Now I just prefer to do it myself - listen to a podcast, sip some coffee. I save $400 but really it’s about the convenience of not making an appointment, schlepping, parking etc

Op here and it takes them between 15-20 minutes to cut my hair. Long hair doesn’t mean fuller or voluminous. Regardless, they’re not charging for volume they’re charging for length. Maybe the hourly charge will benefit me unless they decide to la di da , take their time and milk the clock. After reading some of your replies I should count my blessings that I’m getting out of a salon for under $100.

I never thought i would DIY but i started out of necessity in 2020 and never went back. Esalon offers a great color match and quality product if you're doing single process, and long hair is surprisingly easy to trim at home after a few YouTube videos.
