Hair salons are implementing hourly pricing and billing more for basic services, from single-process color to blowouts. Some customers say it’s out of control.
https://www.washingtonpost.com/style/of-interest/2024/03/18/hair-stylist-salon-expensive/ I found this article to be very interesting. As somebody who only gets a very basic haircut (no blow dry) three times a year, I’ve seen the price skyrocket. It cost me $95 because my hair is long (I get long layers). I don’t understand why it costs more to cut my hair because it’s long. It doesn’t take any more or less effort than somebody who has shoulder length and above hair. So how much are all of you paying who most likely get more done to your hair than I do? |
You have more hair to cut. More hair = more time to cut |
| In my experience as a 53 yr old woman who gets her hair colored, cut/trimmed etc once a month and has been for 2 or 3 decades now, salons have always charged differently amounts for long, short, hair. |
I’m not trying to be combative here, but 2 inches is 2 inches regardless of whether the hair is mid back or above shoulder. |
| yawn. I pay $650 for just my color 2x a year. If you don't want to pay professionals, DIY. |
Short styles are often more complicated. |
+1 My hair is relatively long, no layers. Takes 5 minutes to cut. Why am I being charged more? |
| Salon prices are absurd. Last time I was in I decided to not leave the salon with a wet head and was appalled that it was an $85 add on. For 15 minutes of work that lasted 24 hours. What a waste of money. |
well then OP, you will be the beneficiary of the paid by the hour rule |
If it's so easy, just get it done at Hair Cuttery. You don't need salon service for a 5 min cut. |
Mine takes about 15 with a wash. Just trim the ends a few inches. Nothing fancy. No layers. |

Couldn't read the article.
I go to a salon and get a haircut, blow dry and style for less than $100 so maybe OP just goes somewhere really fancy? If they bill hourly, wouldn't it benefit someone like OP who is a quick trim? |
Just because it’s a quick and easy style doesn’t mean I want to go to hair Cuttery. I want a quality cut, but I don’t want to be ripped off. |
| I'm a pretty high maintenance person, but my hair cut is easy on my long hair. I just go to Hair Cuttery or similar. It's $25 plus tip. If you aren't getting anything done, why pay a stylist? It's like going to a dermatologist to get a facial and wondering why it costs so much. You're paying for their skill. If you don't need that skill and just need a basic service, go to the basic places! |
| I costs me including tip almost $400 every 3 months. I get cut, blow dry, full highlights and Olaplex mixed in with the color. It takes about 3 hours (mostly processing time for color and toner) |
