Silver Creek? Can kids use bathrooms safely and bring backpacks

Vaping in. class.? I believe kids. Any insights?

It's possible this goes on at your kid's school but not mine.

How the school handles the issues, especially with the communication to families makes the difference; at least to make families think they are being transparent but often they will tell parents that their hands are tied - fERPA and Central Office Communications. You will not know details. Get involved at the school and community. Volunteer.

Apparently they aren't similar if kids are vaping in bathrooms and classrooms where your kids go.

My SCMS student told me she has never seen anyone vaping in class, in the hallways, or in the bathrooms.

Parent of an SCMS 6th grader here. If your kids aren't seeing vaping, they are either really, really oblivious or lying. Please make sure you are talking to your kids about this stuff, even if they say they aren't seeing it. My 6th grader sees it regularly, especially on the bus, and it's not always nicotine that's being vaped.

Thank you so very much for sharing this. So sad to hear. Esp concerning bc sometimes kids don't even know what is actually in their own vape beyond thc and nicotine, and others who def don't consent are exposed. So, forced exposure w/o consent for other kids and for staff too.

omg and for the bus driver too

Please don’t insult our kids. They simply have had a different experience than your kid. For example, my kid doesn’t take a bus.

Agree. PP is insulting kids who happen to have a different experience from her kid’s experience.

Mine takes the bus and says it does not happen there. May depend on the bus.

Two set of girls and boys bathrooms on each floor. One set of each gender bathrooms locked on second, third and fourth floors. Students have 4 girls bathrooms total they can use during the day plus the health room bathroom. And 4 boy bathrooms total they can use during the day plus the health room bathroom. And there could be a gender neutral one somewhere in the building.

The differences aren't minute, especially if you're asking if it's safe to use the bathroom.

Locked! Even prison bathrooms aren't locked.

6th grade should be housed in elementary school. Call it junior high again for 7 & 8th grades.

You can ask questions to newly appointed AP at Silver Creek MS. She was a former AP at East Silver Spring ES which was in the news in 2020-2021: https://www.dcurbanmom.com/jforum/posts/list/690/943806.page

Best part of the letter we got announcing this is that the principal made it 100% clear that she had nothing to do with the decision and that it came from David Chia, her Director in central office. I don’t know who he is, but this is a terrible decision. I hope parents rally against it -NP

Sadly, not being able to use bathrooms at SC will prepare them for their BCC career. The bathroom situation there is untenable. The administration is great at giving lip service, not so great at actually changing anything or making the bathrooms there safe.

MCPS ES mom in this pyramid. What makes the bathrooms unsafe in MS and BCC??
