If the point was the recreation and, um, kinesis?, then they'd just all run around a track together someplace, admire each other's nipple tape, etc.

What's funny about these things is that participants in this mostly solitary hobby pay the city to let them parade it through the neighborhoods once a year like it's an event of civic interest. It's like seeing ship-in-a-bottle enthusiasts pull their creations in wagons down the middle of the city's streets, cheered on by occasional small clusters of curious residents. I'd staff a gatorade table for that.


I don't think they're paying the city. This is a for-profit race and they money is going into private pockets. One of those pockets belongs to the wife of a former city councilmember who was jailed for defrauding DC taxpayers, so basically his pocket, too.
