Most marathons don’t require you to “qualify.” The main one that does is Boston-and you qualify for Boston by running a different marathon (like the DC one) under a certain time. Even Boston, if you don’t have a qualifying race time, you can gain an entry by raising money for specific charities. |
It used to have a full, right? |
| If they want to have this marathon they should make it a nonprofit and just run laps around the mall. |
Yes but few people ran it. I’m not surprised they are only offering the half now. |
| It seems like up to a half dozen people could be impacted. When will this national nightmare end? |
| Thanks for posting this! Are the cherry blossoms out yet? Was thinking of going this weekend. |
| Laughing. Most of the marathons block the other side of the city and it’s awful several times a year. I’m sorry this singular one affects you. |
Blergh. Effects. Autocorrect |
| Our neighborhood has also seen civil unrest in the last few years. I don't appreciate hearing crowds screaming from my home a couple of blocks away from the race. I do know it is stupid race day, but it is unsettling. |
Oh give me a break. I am sitting in my condo directly on the race route and still managed to drink my coffee without fear. |
You seem overdramatic. Stay at a hotel if you need or go away for the weekend. Or get noise cancelling headphones. You live in a city. |
| You guys all suck. Get away from your devices out and run/walk this HALF marathon and enjoy other people. |
The issue is that it creates unnecessary traffic through a really dense commercial area of the city. Drivers are just going about their business and have no idea there’s a marathon happening a few blocks away. All they know is that they’re stuck in a traffic standstill with no recourse to get out. The route literally stops all north/south traffic. Last year, the pharmacy at the Columbia Heights Target couldn’t open because the pharmacists couldn’t get to the store. There was so much traffic blocking the surrounding area because of the marathon. I have no problems with a marathon. I’ve run several. Just don’t do this one on a Saturday through major commercial areas like Adams Morgan and Columbia Heights. |
Exactly. What if someone had a critically urgent need for medication? It's this kind of stuff that going to get Trump elected again. |
If the point was the recreation and, um, kinesis?, then they'd just all run around a track together someplace, admire each other's nipple tape, etc. What's funny about these things is that participants in this mostly solitary hobby pay the city to let them parade it through the neighborhoods once a year like it's an event of civic interest. It's like seeing ship-in-a-bottle enthusiasts pull their creations in wagons down the middle of the city's streets, cheered on by occasional small clusters of curious residents. I'd staff a gatorade table for that. |
