I enjoy asking people I suspect of being anti Semitic if they're Jewish. |
People always think I am Spanish or Greek. I was literally in a hospital recently and the check in lady came back out of the office to the waiting area to double check. She said I looked too “exotic” to be American. She was a POC herself and I assumed it was a compliment on some level. My DH was with me and we still joke about my exotic flair. |
Sí. 🥒 |
Was your dad a G.I.? |
What’s with the cucumber? |
Like most things, it depends. It doesn’t bother me at all if people are guessing wrong to assume that I”m more like them. When I lived in NYC, people often spoke to me in Spanish, and that felt welcoming. What’s bizarre and offensive is when people TELL me what I look like or seem like to them — in ways that center them and their guesses rather than any genuine effort to connect with me.
The vast majority of kids get a break on this, as long as their curiosity is accompanied by a modicum of politeness. |
This happens to me all the time. Are you asking because you think this is a microagression?
I don’t let it bother me. I think people are just trying to connect. |
Two ethnicities I find very easy to guess are Ethiopian and Filipino, with the latter being especially easy to guess if last name is known. I work in healthcare, so I have a lot of colleagues from both countries. |
No I don't get offended. I'm from the UK but when I lived in Bethesda often people thought I was Scandinavian which surprised me. Then I did my DNA and it turns out that I am 35% Scandinavian. So there's that. |
People guess my ethnicity wrong all the time, especially when I'm tan. I'm not offended at all. I do find it weird that people try to guess it in the first place. |
Yeah it's rude. |
If you're from the British Isles you are definitely part Scandinavian. Because history, just sayin. |
It's part of the Hilaria Baldwin diss. In a cooking show segment she "forgot" the english word for cucumber. |
Doesn’t bother me at all. Glad people are interested enough to find out. |
