If OP is the one using retinol, that's clearly the prime suspect. You could cut back a bit, or use bakuchiol, which is less efficient but more tolerable. I can hardly use retinol. |
I’m in my 40s and I have yet to find anything that doesn’t aggravate my sensitive, acne prone skin . I’ve tried most of the ones recommended for sensitive skin (Cerave, Neutrogena, Vanicream). When I look up more expensive brands, the reviews are mixed. I use Elta MD sunscreen in the morning but didn’t have luck with the moisturizer.
I have similar sounding skin. I was given some Juice Beauty moisturizer as a gift. I was hoping it was going to be the same as the drugstore stuff, but I can really tell when I'm not using it. Several of theirs work well for me. The only one I didn't like as much was one labeled "oil free." What has also helped is less cleansing. I use jojoba oil to remove sunscreen and any makeup and then cleanse to remove that oil. Morning I often just use water. If I over cleanse my face makes too much oil and then breakouts. Current cleanser is also juice beauty. Is nice to find something cheaper but haven't had as much success. |
Ultra 30 spf here. |

I use Laroche Posay AP+M (https://www.target.com/p/la-roche-posay-lipikar-ap-m-triple-repair-body-moisturizing-cream-body-and-face-moisturizer-for-dry-skin-with-shea-butter-and-glycerin-13-5-oz/-/A-52725266) if my face is really dry and Aveeno’s oil-free/oat moisturizer (https://www.target.com/p/aveeno-calm-restore-facial-moisturizer-for-sensitive-skin-fragrance-free-1-7-oz/-/A-80039286) otherwise. The Aveeno one is also good around my eyes; anything else results in contact dermatitis.
Using the Laroche cream to sandwich tretinoin slowly but eventually got me to the point of tolerating the tret; completely cleared my skin. All other attempts resulted in horrid irritation. Now I can use it straight. |

| I recently found Olay Age Defying Classic Daily Renewal Cream and am loving it! I’ve tried expensive and drug store brands and find that ingredients that are supposed to help for aging AND acne-prone skin such as Niacinamide, break me out! I am 55 and have acne prone skin though not oily skin. I use tretinoin most nights, and sometimes azeliaic acid cream in the daytime very sparingly. I sometimes need a moisturizer and sometimes I don’t. This past winter I especially needed more moisture than the Control Corrective Oil Free SPF 30 I use has. (Yes, I wish it was a higher SPF, but it does not cause issues for my skin or eyes and is all the moisture I need in the summer. So for non-beach days, this is my go-to sunscreen.) The Olay works great! I use it carefully under my eyes—it unfortunately has fragrance. Sort of expensive for a drug store item but $14 has been worth it to me. I hope you find something that works for you. |

Honestly, I just re-ordered Nivea face cream - the one in the blue jar.
I used to use so much (expensive) stuff. Now it's Maelove Super Smooth Serum and Tretinoin (evening), CE Ferulic serum (morning) and Nivea, then TJ Daily Sunscreen. |
+1 I had to build up to using a retinol. |

| OP here. I’ve used Retin for years now. Even before I couldn’t find a good moisturizer but my skin was oilier and younger so I went without one. It doesn’t seem to be an option anymore. Thank you for all the recs! |

This did not work for me! |
| I have the same skin type and Kate Somerville Hydrakate Water Recharging Cream is amazing. Don’t use the serum, it’s not as good. You can find it new on Poshmark for way cheaper than the Kate Somerville website. |

51. Sensitive skin, can't tolerate any fragrances. Even Neutrogena and la Roche don't work for me. I finally found my HG. I've been using this for over a year and loving it. Kiehls ultra ceramic with squalene. Its pricey but I buy the biggest size and it lasts forever. I use it at night. And in the early morning under my spf. In the summer time I only use st night. Get a small tub and try it. The sample packs aren't enough to really know.

OP - I have similar skin to you, also 40’s, but I use tretinoin, not retin-A. I have tried most suggestion in this thread; the best were either the Kiehls ultra face moisturizer or tatcha dewy skin cream. Both were okay, but not holy grail. Recently I started using a Korean moisturizer - Etude House Soon Jung 2x Barrier intensive cream - and it’s amazing (and I think under $20). It’s lighter weight than the other 2 I had been using but it somehow keeps my skin more moisturized - like glowy. I use with toner and serum. I can’t really use vit C bc it irritates my skin/causes redness. Highly recommend! |
