NVSL Seeding Surprises?

They should have no kids under the age of 12 to seed a meet - yet, somehow by magic they do.

Even accounting for large families with kids of all ages, it does not add up. Those teams should die because of their membership situation. It does with other pools, but not them.

Overlee's wait list only got so insane after they did significant capital improvements in 2011-12. Keep in mind most members do not give a rat's ass about the swim team and just want a nice pool to go to. And it's a nice pool.

And Overlee has also consistently started losing to Chesterbrook and Tuckahoe as the wait list issue has continued to get worse.

So they kind of are slowly sliding.

This is actually a topic of great concern to people who are deeply invested in remaining in D1 (who yes, are insane). Someone ran for the Overlee board on this very platform because Overlee does NOT let people jump the wait list despite rampant rumors to the contrary. Apparently this fear of what will the waiting list do to our D1 status resonated with people, because people voted for the guy.

Part of the answer is more people than you think get into these pools really early, before they even have kids. A lot of them grew up in the area and understand the NVSL pool scene so knew enough to get into these pools pre-kids.

Another reason why these D1 pools remain good is just sheer volume. It's a big pool and there are a lot of members. They are drawing from a densely populated area and are always at capacity.

I don't know if Overlee allows it, but lots of pools allow memberships (bonds, shares, w/e) to be transferred as part of a house purchase. This would explain an influx of kids younger than the wait list would suggest, since people on the list have to wait for a member to relinquish their membership entirely rather than transfer it.

+1
Came here to say the same. I think they’ll do alright.

We received our membership invitation when my oldest was in his final season of 8&U. We declined because we are happy at our middle division pool as our kids are not D1 swimmers. I applied to all of the Arlington pools while I was pregnant. I have a friend whose kids swim for a D1 pool. She swam D1 in college and they bought their home in Arlington specifically because it would convey with pool membership.

This was us, we got on several waitlists when we bought our first house in Arlington, which was about 4 years before we had kids. We got off a couple of the waitlists when they were toddlers/preschoolers and went to another pool before getting into Overlee the summer my oldest was 5 and started swim team 2 years later. So about 10 years on the waitlist, but my kids were still young when we got in. I know others with kids our kids' ages and younger whose memberships conveyed with their house purchase.

This is true. I have fast club swimmers. Years ago, the club coach said try for a div 1 pool and explain your kids’ times. I did and the 3 diff pools I approached said great, get in line. It’s not true.

Another member of the O-K-M fan club (even though kids swimming for a different non-D1 team).

I have been shocked at how dumpy and rundown some pools are. Honestly can't believe people pay to belong to some of these non-HOA pools.

When all surrounding pools have long waitlists people don't tend to have much of a choice. It's either the pools you turn your nose up at or nothing.

It’s all part of the summer swim charm in my opinion! Kids have the best summers ever at a low cost and no frills space. It’s the only hold out in NOVA

I heard the Tuckahoe reps threw an absolute hissy fit and are refusing to host divisionals because it was their turn to have 3 away meets. I really hope someone takes them down a peg this summer!

Not surprised.

Overlee is #2 in Div 1.

Who will host divisionals then? OKM?

For us, it is about being with our neighbors. Our pool may be dumpy, but we all know each other and the kids love summer swim. They all swim and any who want, go on to be jr coaches, life guards etc. While we may not have the best facilities, I’d argue our sense of community and enjoyment is much higher than some of these fancier pools.
