I actually don't think there is a lot of Wash U hate. It's that people with affiliations with it get super triggered by any not-positive comment, they respond by upping the ante, and that sets a firestorm of people piling on. Same thing happens with NEU. People need to just roll with the punches. It's not like your flaming or boostering is going to change anyone's mind. So just chill OP

I have no love of WashU (my kids didn't get in), but this is simply untrue. A big percentage of the students get admitted ED1 - they have not heard back from any Ivy. And those admitted ED2 - if they applied to an Ivy, has head back from one. Some people simply like WashU - beautiful campus, and where their first-years live looks like a Disney interpretation of a European Villa - - which is to say, my kids loved it! And for those who are interested in this, historically a vibrant Jewish student presence. I will say that WashU's popularity among certain communities on the East Coast may be less into WashU for thier kids because its perceived prestige for better or worse tied to the USNWR rankings, and some may not like the state politics of Missouri. |

I don't think people here hate the school at all.
I do think people here find their marketing tedious. |
I haven't spent much time on DCUM...but already realizing this to be TRUTH! |
| St Louis has the biggest fault line in the US. It is ripe for a devastating earthquake. |
I think NEU marketer has kindled the hate for that one. They make me dislike the school (or at least the fanbase), and my kids didn't even apply there! U Chicago to a lesser extent. I don't get the ctcl or WashU animosity though. |
Yes and the Colby marketer doesn't help either. I haven't seen anybody pushing WUSTL though. |
Oooooo-kay. You do realize that Wash U is one of the wealthiest suburbs of St. Louis, right? |
So an imaginary "marketer" has you hating a school. They are kind of living rent free in your litterbox, eh cat lady? |
| WashU is fine but is is very expensive, geographically isolated in St Louis, and therefore inconvenient for visiting. Most people would rather do in-state college options in VA or MD. |

My *perception* is that it is a fine school with some good/great programs, but it isn't tippy top known for anything.
Personally I agree with a lot of what the OP wrote. The campus beautiful and contained with a great view of downtown. Adjacent to an Olmsted design park, on a street car line from the airport to downtown. It has a lot going for it. But compared to other schools that it competes with, there isn't those one or two programs that really get kids excited. It is a strong D3 sports school, but that doesn't give rah-rah culture, so to me, it is one of those schools that is good in every area but not superlative in any area. You can go down the list of peer schools: Northwestern: Journalism/Theater/Sciences/Econ Chicago: Econ, hard sciences Carnegie: Strong sciences, theater Georgetown: SFS Other schools have that one or two things that make them stand out. I don't know what that is with WashU, though I would have been more than happy for any of my kids to go there. I personally loved it. |
DP please. No one thinks about NEU. |
I disagree. WashU is amazing in the biomedical and related sciences and has a top-notch med school. It is a lot like a slightly lesser-known Hopkins without as much grind. |
There are very, very few schools that are "tippy top known" in one particular area - for obvious reasons. I would argue that a college being more generalized but good in many different fields is actually better than being just tippy top in one or two fields (unless perhaps that particular field is what you plan to do for the rest of your life and then even so). Perhaps that would apply more in grad school. Getting a well-rounded liberal arts undergraduate education, no matter what your field of study, is actually very important. it will make you a better engineer, computer scientist, mathematician, whatever. And don't forget many college students change their major, some more than once. Being a more well-rounded person is actually a good thing. At the very least, it gives you perspective as you go on in life. |
"I think NEU marketer has kindled the hate for that one. They make me dislike the school (or at least the fanbase), and my kids didn't even apply there! U Chicago to a lesser extent. I don't get the ctcl or WashU animosity though." LOL. Okey dokey. Rent free in the spurned woman's mind. |
