Salaried Employee - 8am Meeting - Personal Conflicts like working out?

To be honest the vast majority of people under 35 in workforce are not fit to be in the workforce.

I struggle every day with the basics. Today I had a 24 year old answer his personal phone in middle of business meeting talk for five minutes while the other two just say they’re looking.

Why is he taking calls? Obvious not work related? When you bring it up they look at you like you have two heads

I work 8-4, so I'm picturing if someone tried to schedule a meeting at 7am. I would not accept a meeting at 7 am or 4pm. Just because you have a job doesnt mean they get to monopolize every second of your day!

I couldn't read the original article due to the paywall, but on a follow up article pp posted I agree with this:

If it's an emergency, maybe. But in my industry nothing is really an emergency. Almost everything can wait until proper working hours.

Doesn’t your work email beep? It is drilled into me every night check work email for meetings. I also check it in morning.

My one job we had nearly all meetings between 730 am and 930 am or lunch time or after 430 pm.

We blocked 930 am to noon and 2pm to 430 pm as core work hours. Meetings were at non core work hours

The article said it was a quarterly meeting that the person was made aware of before they accepted the job. If that’s actually the case, I’m Team Manager.

DP... but no, I don't check. Why would you do that? Also, the point of core work hours is that's when the majority of people are working. You're supposed to have meetings then! So backwards.

I would not take an 8am meeting unless it was a good reason. I wouldn't say why, though, I would just say I can't make it.

If someone tries to schedule an 8 am meeting with me I say “that might be tough as I think my 7am is likely to overrun- can we do 6 am?”

That usually shuts them up.

Not much flexibility on this thread. I block my calendar from 7-9am so people don’t slap a morning meeting in there before I see it when I start working between 830 and 9. But if they ask in advance, no problem.

And management meetings or internal client meetings meant to encompass various time zones, set in advance, no question.

WFH makes this a lot easier and should be recognized- you’re gaining flexibility, so be flexible!! It’s not a one-way street.

Agree that 8-9am is prime school drop off time and difficult for parents although most people can juggle and make it work. If not, it’s a valid reason.

Being flexible and accommodating really does help your career- I’m not saying no boundaries, but I wouldn’t refuse meetings just on principle either.

Pre pandemic, I worked at a government contracting firm in Tysons. They used to ask me, along with about 20 others, to show up for 7:00 a.m. meetings just because the director liked to start early. I pushed back, explaining that my daycare didn't even open until 7 and I had an hour-long commute. As a result, I was written up and scolded. I ended up quitting shortly after that.

Meetings are not work. Morning stand ups and Scrums are common in some companies. But at non BS govt jobs meetings are rare. For instance my bi monthly departmental status meeting was 730 am to 9am where we run through our trans projects. My monthly all hands was at 12-1 pm on third Wed of month and my weekly SMT meeting was 12 noon Mondays. I only had those on calendar.

I did not have a single meeting 9-12 or 2 to 5pm on calendar they are work hours. I would poke someone on slack or do shared doc or quick google handout but never a meeting

And my morning meeting my kids were up and gone by 7 am. I do meeting hoodie unshaven in pajama pants with hoodie on looking all IT cool. Even if going bus stop just turn off camera and take phone with you. We get folks walking to school. We also get folks on thread mill at meeting or eating breakfast.

I would say yes. In fact some prick did that to me only once ever when remote. I told him I am booked up after 5am and did a 4 am meeting.

My email doesnt beep, but I do sometimes check it before bed. I make a note and respond the day after. The person who had my job prior to me left, and we keep in contact. She told me that she would do emails at 11pm and then again at 5am. I laughed and have never once done that.

So this person refused to come to the meeting because of a workout class. Does it change your mind because they arent parents?

I just think our time away from work should be OURS. Whether its because of kids, gym, medical issues, etc.
