Anyone do this and use a tutoring company they would recommend to help get pre exposure to some of the math needed for the physics side of it?

other than college application, what are the reasons for doing Physics C in 11th instead of 12th?

Yes it’s for application purposes. The counselor said AP Physics is normally expected by most of the schools DC may want for CS since it would house within Engineering. DC doesn’t have an extra space for it senior heat with the other classes they are planning to take.

Was it a TJ counselor who said this? Or an external college counselor?

TJ counselor.
Counselor gave example that CS is within VA Tech Engineering school and VA Tech typically expects to see AP Physics for competitive Engineering school applications.

At TJ: AP Physics C covers both M and E&M in one year. The teachers mentioned last spring that they are returning to the rigor of pre Covid years this current school year and that the majority of students take honors physics.

At base HS: AP Physics C: Mechanics and AP Physics C: E&M are both separate year long courses.

+1

In addition, they are not teaching just to AP level. I dont really know about all the courses, but would not be surprised if this is among the top 3-4 toughest courses at TJ based on our own experience even for an out and out math kid for whom Calc BC at TJ was smooth going.

What kind of colleges is your child thinking of applying to, OP? Perhaps there are former TJ parents who have had kids attend those colleges and can share anecdotal experience

As DC is just a sophomore i don't know yet where outside of VA they may be interested in. So currently is is VA Tech, UVA, W&M, plus ???

did the counselor say what else in addition to AP Physics C would VA tech engineering expect to see?

She didn’t mention. It’s possible DC’s other course plans checked the other boxes so it just didn’t come up.

Did the counrselor specify it they expected it junior year? Colleges can see senior year classes

No, DC has other classes they plan to take Sr. Year and cramming AP Physics into Sr. Year would be a tough decision, which is why they're weighing how doable it is to do concurrently with Calc BC

if doing Physics C in junior, what rigorous 4th year course in its place would help for cs engineering major?

Thank you! Very helpful! Exactly the sort of info i was trying to find!

This book is extremely outdated. It references teachers and processes that don't exist at TJ anymore, so do your own research as well.

I’m trying to but don’t know many other TJ parents. Open to any more recent intel you have on how kids prepare for and balance doing AP physics and Calc BC concurrently. I realize 2018 is awhile ago but was hoping its advice about accessing the physics materials to pre-prep may still be up to date.

Yeah, outdated. It appears students back then took AP exams without enrolling in course. Is this normal practice now? If so what subjects are popular for AP self study. I hear the rigor of TJ honors course itself is at AP level, so it pretty much prepares them for most of the AP exam syllabus.

That could be an option - take honors physics and self study for the Physics C exam(s). Is honors physics calculus-based?
Anonymous
No. Honors physics is algebra based.

You can take the world history AP after the standard honors course at TJ. My kid got a 5 because the honors course is taught to a very high level.
