We are above your range but have a newish Porsche Macan which replaced an 11 year old luxury SUV, and another 11 year SUV which is starting to fall apart so we will likely replace it soon. Considering a plug in hybrid Jeep.

If you don't want to spend $60k+ on a car that's fine, but you can afford to and plenty in your income bracket do.

You can also buy a car that’s $60K+ when it’s new but buy it hardly used for a lot less. We’re in this bracket and have a 2016 GMC SUV, a 2011 Audi sedan, and a ten-year-old convertible muscle car for fun. We bought them all used with about 10K miles on them for significant savings.

HHI is $1.1M and we drive a 1995 Saturn SL1 and a 2005 Chevrolet Aveo. Both offer exceptional fuel efficiency. DH and I always get a good chuckle when we see all the witless dolts sporting Teslas in a vain attempt to impress. Newsflash: buying a new car every 2-5 years – even if it is an EV – is not at all environmentally friendly!!

Unsurprisingly, however, as the false claims of Tesla are indeed marketed to appeal to the intellectually inferior half of society.

I had a 1996 SL1. It was stuck and didn’t even have power steering. It had roll down windows. I can’t even believe there’s still many in the road. Once, a car backed into the side of my car and made this horrible crunching sound. I got out to check the damage, and it had bounced right back. The car was made of plastic and cost $10,000 new. Now my credit card bill is more than that each month.

On DCUM it's a badge of honor to have a high HHI and drive crappy cars. Never mind that newer and nicer cars drive better and have more safety features. How's the blind spot and cross-traffic monitoring on your 15 year old Saturn?

You can drive a nice car that's not flashy. For example the Mercedes E-Class wagon looks like a pretty understated station wagon, but it's great inside and drives well (even beter is the E55 AMG Wagon, now discontinued). Or for SUVs, look at the Audi SQ5.

Our HHI is $1mln+ and our family car is $120k, plus we have 3 others, including sports cars. No loans on any of them.

On one hand I'd like something nice, but on the other hand I do now like being showy. Also paying $60k+ for a vehicle seems like a lot.

If you're in this income range, what kind of car do you drive?

Yeah. I was jealous of people that could afford the SL2 at the time, but I’ve taken good care of that little SL1 for over two decades. Still working. Costs about $2K per year to maintain, but way cheaper than a new car, and it’s becoming a collector’s item.

Newer technologies are great, but they’re also designed for younger generations with different capabilities and established norms. For example, DH and I possess the upper body strength and endurance needed to manually roll down windows and drive a stick shift. Millennials are obese and indolent and need machines to perform these functions. DH and I possess the ability to turn our heads and use our side- and rear-view mirrors to look for traffic hazards. Millennials require computers to perform the necessary sensing and analysis and to simply be told what to do.

And don’t get me started on millennials’ obsession with self-driving features so they can text in one hand while holding a McGriddle sandwich in the other. Different worlds.
