I was impressed and was like, "why didn't we just send you to Rutgers?"

Your kid underutilized their vandy education

Fldp programs in industry are for state school kids

T20 private school kids are supposed to go to a bank/consulting firm first before moving over to industry at a higher level

My kid who has "underutilized their Vandy education" according to you has an MBB consulting internship this summer, but wow you're so knowledgeable in how all of this works. Thanks for your insight.

It is fine for NJ kids because they get in-state tuition OP. It is not an attractive option for those paying OOS.

It is expensive, they give zero merit and unless you're going directly into a career in finance, it's a bust.

The sports aren't anything special or have a storied history, New Brunswick is a blah town, it's not warm, it's near NYC (but far enough away that it's not all that accessible), etc.

It is getting recognition for its academics and kids have great outcomes...but it is what it is.

No storied sports history? They shared the 1869 national title with Princeton.

My DS applied to Rutgers (NoVA public HS), was admitted academically with $10k merit/year, but never finished the audition process because he had been accepted to his 2nd and 3rd choices by the time his date came up (and waitlisted by top choice)

His main criteria for choosing where to apply were the studio faculty for his instrument and staying within an 8 hour radius from home and I guess Rutgers checked those boxes. He wasn't looking for schools with the highest percentage of UMC white kids, if you can imagine that.

For 50k/year out of state, no thanks.

Also one of only a handful of top colleges still requiring students to have the COVID vaccine.

2. Student body — historically a lot of commuters and immigrant first gen non-white kids

I posted this in the uiuc thread but there is a reason why uiuc and Rutgers both aren’t on the radar for oos kids —

“UIUC is one of the least white big10 schools

It’s less white than umd

Schools that lack white kids have to compensate with being t20s so an attendee gains prestige — otherwise their brand suffers due to being “uncool” and “not fun” or they can compensate with awesome location (ucsd).

I believe only Rutgers is less white in the big10”

UIUC atleast has elite cs/engineering

Rutgers is a great school for taking brown and black first gen kids and giving them some ses mobility

But because of that, white kids (in state or oos) don’t really want to attend.

Middle class jersey white kids will stretch dollars for PSU or even UConn/zoomass before Rutgers

That's the white kids' problem.

Welcome to America.

My son had a 3.6 with 1100 SAT's. We live in NJ and both my husband and myself are alumni undergrad and MBA class of 2008. My son was denied entry this evening. I can't believe our state school didn't admit our son who hasn't received anything lower then a B over 4 years. NJ system is broken.

Congratulations to those who got in.

Umm because you live in the most educated state in the country (or #2 to mass, depending how you look at it)

1100 is horrible in NJ

What did you and your husband get?

However all is not lost. CC -> Rutgers camden/newark is a pretty straightforward path

Sorry to hear your son was not accepted but with a 3.6, he is sure to get in somewhere good and hopefully he will be happy where he lands. In my state (WI) this is not uncommon at UW-Madison. Very frustrating! Hang in there.

It's an evidence USN&WR ranking is messed up particularly this year lol

I had a high school friend who went there and haaaatttttted it. Transferred to UVA in her third year. She said the campus was depressing. It’s certainly colored my view of the school.

I think CC -> any Rutgers would work if CC grades are good. An 1100 SAT puts you at the 58% overall. But NJ is one of the top states for SAT scores, do you are right that it is unfortunately not impressive for NJ standards.

Check out Montclair, Ramapo, TCNJ & FDU Madison as alternatives if he wants to stay in NJ.

I think the application deadline for TCNJ ( about which I’ve heard very good things) is 2/1. It’s a great in-state option.

Disagree about the bolded. Lots of biotech firms recruit from Rutgers. My niece got a great job just out of college in a biotech firm from there. She is now making close to six figures, zero loans, while her friends who went oos have huge loans, making about the same.
