Snow closing tracker

Did you just move here? There will not be school tomorrow.

DC had practice today - we live in VA but school in DC. We passed at least 2 accidents both directions. Rock Creek was closed for part of the morning due to accidents.

In MD and VA, that's correct. Historically, DC has been a different story altogether. Did YOU just move here?

2-3 inches on bridges that wont yet be cleared?

Why wouldn't they be cleared?

They treated roads over the weekend, the treatment chemicals have now washed off. Some roads are wet and will freeze tonight especially bridges, then the 1-4 inches of snow will stick to the roads.

Are you one of those parents that lives in VA and sends their kid to DC schools and expects the schools to close every time it snows? We live one block from my children's private and they can walk easily. I hope schools do not close.

Lady I can keep my kids home if I want. I don't need a school to tell me how safe it is outside.

Snow 2-3’ is better to drive on than ice/light dusting of snow.

Are you one of those parents who knowingly sends their kid to a private that has students from all over the area (and no doubt touts its geographical diversity)?

WaPo’s Schoolcast predictions: https://wapo.st/3tQI4zX (gift link for those w/o a subscription)

“ Put simply, we think most schools in the region will close. Although precipitation should end early enough for crews to start treating primary roads early Tuesday morning, it’s improbable that they’ll reach secondary and side roads in time to make them safe and passable for the morning commute. At least a delay is pretty much inevitable for all school systems, but closings seem to be the most likely outcome.”
“ D.C. Public Schools is the wild card. Historically, the bar has been much higher for its schools to close, because many students walk or take public transit rather than drive. That said, the school system has closed for less snow than it used to in recent years. We lean toward a delay for DCPS but wouldn’t be surprised if it shut down for the day.”

My own take: Whether your particular private school follows a public system or makes its own decisions may make the difference in whether you see a delay or closure. Private schools also definitely take into consideration the fact that their students and teachers are coming in from a wide area, which makes some more conservative in their decisions. That paired with the fact that many just move to online school for the day rather than close—online may be very likely tomorrow for the schools that do have that choice.

Capital Weather Gang says DCPS has a 40% chance of closing and 70% of at least a delay. But you know better than the meteorologists.

Do you somehow believe the majority of students and teachers live within walking distance of their private school? It’s great for you that you have that “neighborhood school” vibe that usually only comes with public, but it is not the case for most students and teachers at private schools.

Private school administrators have a much more realistic and sympathetic sense of where their whole community lives and commutes from than you seem to, and make their decisions accordingly.

DCPS has to feed the students that’s why they might open. lol if you think DC privates are going to open.
