Retirement - Knoxville TN or Greenville SC

Unless you’re a republican , stay out of the south. They will pretend to like you if you make it known you’re a progressive Dem, but the second any kind of widespread social chaos or breakdown of social order happens, they will kill you. It will be like The Purge movies. I’ve literally heard this from people in the south. They’re content to get along with neighbors who are northerners and Democrats while everything is calm, but as soon as society breaks down they’re going to kill their neighbors. They are planning to do this. It’s premeditated.

I grew up in Knoxville. the smokies are lovely. Having UT is mostly nice. but have you spent any time there? more churches than trees, and it's VERY trumpy. Perhaps wasn't always thus (when I was growing up we were still a purple state). now there are triple-sized billboards all over I-40 that just say TRUMP. The many friends and family I still have there are either trump converts or in something close to religious and political exile. The student section at UT football games yelled "let's go Brandon" (and its actual counterpart) for a great part of many football games the past couple of seasons.

If you want beautiful mountains but don't love trump, go to Asheville.

If you love trump, then I fully encourage you to go to TN where at least your vote won't matter

PP who mentioned religious exile.

There's a baked-in point there too that others have made: You have to go to church in TN, or you won't have that much of a social life, at least not with the majority of people. You might find a non-religious circle, but they won't be connected, b/c to be connected is to go to church. Social life is football and church.

People say Greenville is religious but their congressman left his wife for an Instagram model with a vengeful husband so how religious can it be. It’s all for show.

Would a Satanic Church count as a church? Because Ive always wanted to start one of those in the south. And heavily recruit local youth.

Here’s one in Greenville. Guess what? It’s more expensive than DC and the schools are atrocious.

a lot of it's for show, of course. but it's a show you have to attend, pay money to, put your hands in the air and shout to the lord for, talk the talk for, etc. in order to have a social life.

Do you know what is really atrocious, PP?

Your reading comprehension. The very first word in the thread title is “retirement.”

Did it not occur to your smooth brain that OP does not care about local school quality?

this seems like an...overreaction.

Why does everyone in Knoxville have multiple tattoos/sleeves? It jumped out when we visited.

Up your game and aim for Beaufort, SC.

Wherever you are, please remain there with your kind.

I love everything about Knoxville but the prices have gone insane since COVID. You used to be able to get a house in the Fort (walking distance to UT) for under $300k. Now those same houses, if you can find one, run about $700k+.

Due to the nature of the college town the more students they accept the tighter close in housing gets. But it is an amazing city.
