Retirement - Knoxville TN or Greenville SC

I have family in Greenville. They aren’t religious and neither is their social circle. It’s a fun town. Lots of restaurants, live music. Housing has gone up.

Greenville is a lovely town where they tore out a freeway to create a pedestrian bridge over the water flowing past the old highway abutments. I like that they made that happen, against the highway interests. That said, It’s not that inexpensive and the cute part of town is small. And not balanced politically.

Re: building a new house: why? So much easier to ramp to the door of a cute rambler. It might be wise to live there awhile becfore you go to all that trouble.

In either city, finding a buildable lot in a walkable area might be a challenge.

All are welcome -- those with Bibles and those who don't have one. Greenville and Knoxville are both beautiful small southern cities with friendly, welcoming people! I think you'd love either one!

Another drive-by “we’re more sophisticated than those southern bumpkins” post.

You are projecting your own insecurities. Greenville is deeply religious compared to the DC metro.

The entire south is flyover country.

Classic DCUM racist response. You know the blackest states by % are in the South, right??

Greenville is way, way too Southern for me too for the record. I would never want my kids to grow up there.

My mom likes with us and needs a handicap accessible house. Thought it would be easier to build a small, one level house with those specifications which we would also use to age in place.

I don’t think that’s true anywhere but definitely not in walkable areas.

I think a lot of DCUM posters are so accustomed to living in non-diverse, non-rural areas that they have no comprehension of the facts about the south.

Greenville SC and Knoxville TN come to mind. Thoughts?

Neither place is friendly because there are MAGAs there.

Avoid the south!

No women or POC should voluntarily move to the south or a red state.

PP here. I'm neither and couldn't disagree more.

I love TN. I could easily see myself retiring there as well.

Greenville has excellent healthcare. I would not worry about this.
