The essay alone is not going to get anyone in. Picking the right set of colleges consistent with your profile is more important than the essay. The college essay guy (recommended by others) is a good source but don't over-analyze it. I think the essay guy goes into too much detail. Just pick a topic and write a good story that shows who you are. Does not need to be a lesson learned or have some profound meaning. Buy a good book about successful essays. There are a couple available for free online. Those give you an idea of what worked and you can write something along those lines. |
| ^^ PP again.. Don't perfect the essay too much. My DC's essay had several issues - grammar, tense, etc. that he would not allow us to change. We also ran the essay through ChatGPT and the 'cleaned up' version, while a lot better grammatically, somehow seemed to have 'lost its soul'. In the end DC took a couple of word substitutions and readability edits from us but submitted them as he wrote it. DC is a creative person but average grades/high SAT. He got into pretty much every school he got into in the T40-100 range. |
We've used Wyzant for a variety of subjects. We tried a few different tutors for writing and had a good experience. We're also very hands on and DC was enrolled in the school of mom for a few months. |

Lol does it matter? Or is this like wine appreciation where you say "Let's have this one. It has notes of Joe Rochambeau." |
| college essay guy is amazing. free. the essay should be your kids' voice. there is a method to them, but your kid should read all of them on his site, and find their own voice. then, parents can edit for grammar, punctuation. that's it. |

Local in Arlington - I highly recommend the Essay Coaches.
https://www.theessaycoaches.com/ We hired Adrienne - but others I know who used this Co and have had good experiences with both coaches. I especially loved how my son’s voice and personality came out really strong in all his essays. They spend alot of time up front talking to your child to understand who they are and what makes them unique. And my favorite part - I did not have to be the nag. |
$16,000 to $22,000??? Wow |
Please don’t advertise for Mattie. “This guy” is a terrible writer. 1. These two essentially identical sentences next to each other: “A lot of students run track and want to write about their experiences. That’s great except that a lot of other students also run track and have similar things to say.” https://www.collegewithmattie.com/how-to-create-easy-original-college-application-essay-topics-introducing-half-ideas/ 2. “In the week between meetings, you write the essay. You write it.” https://www.collegewithmattie.com/how-i-work/ 3. Long single sentence: “ What makes me different is that I can write and edit at a professional level, I handle every aspect of the work and demand a high barrier of quality for everything I submit, I think differently and will give you advice no one else will, and I love what I do and enjoy every second I get to spend with kick-ass teenagers.” https://www.collegewithmattie.com/about/ Tons of examples…and he’s $400/hour for a single session or $16000 for 9 essays. No one is legitimately recommending this guy, except this guy or his friends/family. |
| I am an essay coach and consultant and have taken many of the College Essay Guy's classes (as well as some through other companies) and I think his method is the best for finding and developing a topic. If your child is already a great writer, the brainstorming and leveling up are the most important parts. Fwiw, I hired them for my own kids 2x now (about to do it again for a 3rd) and they have all had great experiences. My clients and parents say the same when I do surveys of their experiences after they get in -- the process was low stress, well organized and they felt like their essays really conveyed who they are. I do think I do a little more hand holding through the process than college essay guy, but if you just need essay coaching, that's where I would go. |
He’s sooo bad on Reddit. |
