That's not the case at my kids' school. The PTA parents are just regular parents and their kids are just regular kids. This year, the ones with 3rd-6th graders don't have kids in AAP. It's not particularly competitive, everyone's happy. |
Advanced math is available at all FCPS elementary schools, outside of full time AAP (not just center schools). That’s a subject specific service —— in math specifically. |
It totally depends. Are there a lot of kids with those scores at the school? If there are, they don’t need a label/different place - they are served where they are with other students with similar needs. This is part of the whole shift to local norming, including a lot more AAP in standard classes and not just in full-time, and trying to focus on what student needs and not a label. The parent meetings at my kid’s school said this multiple times last year and this year. |
Are there a lot of other students with similar scores to your daughter? If so, that is probably why. Id ask the teacher what aap is happening in her current classroom. Those resources are available to all k-6 teachers. |
This is why some LL4 aren’t doing principal place any more and are doing clusters. With principal placing it just ends up being about who is the pushiest with the principal or being in the know about asking - and then people think they need to be eligible at middle school and transportation costs get out of control. Have you asked about what AAP materials your student is using instead of asking about a label? That might get you more useful information. |
As I already mentioned the kid is already in level III .Its just 1 hour pullout weekly and in my kids level III they are discussing some random topics . In level IV they do advance math at my school . I feel level III doesnt add any value to the "advanced ".
The teacher and the AART in my school are not friendly they deny to meet with you for any discussion . Totally frustrated with the school.Im not in financial position to move to other private school . |
Ours read a book and used it to discuss various topics and complete assignments. |
I heard testing recently doesn’t include reading areas to improve inclusive approach. Is that true?

My 6th grader is at an AAP center and she had several new kids move to our center from their base schools this year. I have no idea whether they were found eligible earlier and just now decided to move to the center or if they tried multiple times. I found it interesting though. |
Lemon Road? |
Be on the PTA and contribute $$$. That's how all the kids at our school got principal placed. Chair the fundraisers and your kid is in!! Easy. |
I am not OP, but I came here in researching a similar question. We came from a different school system and I really can’t figure out if I should refer my child for level 4 AAP or just level 3. She definitely excels at core subjects, but has some challenge in math because they were in a different math curriculum previously.
Am I allowed to write the school and say we welcome your evaluating our child for AAP level four? I don’t feel qualified to understand if my child would be appropriate for level four. I definitely feel confident in everything but the math section and on that, I am just ignorant as I’m not an educator in this system. I attended the information session and the main focus was telling us that we’re not allowed to ask the teachers if they think our child would qualify. This FCPS process is very confusing. |
you can ask to be evaluated but filling out the referral forms for both level IV and level III
if your child struggles in math they will have a hard time in level iv or advanced math without extra help. What grade is your child in ? |
This is not true. Principal Placement happens at Center schools also, but for the home school base population. |
Principals can only place if there is room to do so. If the classes are already too big to support additional students, principals won't place any additional student into the level 4 program. If there is room, they do it if they think the kid deserves to be in level 4. |
