Boys Volleyball in FCPS

Anonymous
Boys volleyball is such a great sport! I'd love to sign this, but my son will graduate this year. I will share it. Boys' sports are so limited in the Fall, which is one of the most important seasons to join a team, especially if you are coming from middle school.

No one is trying to replace football. These boys already play volleyball. They are trying to make it an official varsity sport.

Something would have to be cut. Right now, there is balance between boys and girls sports in terms of number of slots available and in terms of budget. Adding another boys sport means something gets cut or you find another girls sport to make varsity

I don’t know why these people don’t get it. They keep pushing this issue when there is a reason for it to be like it is. And with all the more important issues out there, it’s crazy that they keep taking up meeting time and high level staff time with this issue.

And yet when concerns are raised about spending meeting time and high level staff time debating the renaming of certain high schools (like Woodson that no one even knew the name’s origin of before it was dug up and broadcast) instead of focusing on important things like academic performance, we are told that the board can easily multitask.

Football and cross country are almost always no cut sports and both are in fall already
so your sin is welcome to join either of those to make friends.

Most schools only have one gym and space is very limited for the existing sports to practice.

Volleyball for boys is so unpopular that it is basically nonexistent in local rec leagues. The whole idea is silly.

Boys Volleyball is a VHSL sport so it would be best to reach out to VHSL and the director of activities in FCPS and find out what the process is to add a sport to a district.

+1. These parents and kids have been going to meeting after meeting about this with no comments about the Title IX issue.

I’m not familiar with Title IX but when looking at the list of fall sports, there are more girl sports than boy sports.

Number of sports isn't the issue, it's the number of slots and the funding. Football is both huge and expensive

Fcps doesnt not fund sports. Hence various teams' fundraisers and Booster Club.

Some sports are absolutely funded. Others (rowing, dance) are not. I have no idea why some are chosen to be funded and others aren’t.

Are rowing and dance club sports vs varsity?

Dance is.

Our football team has banners, private trainers who come onsite to do speed/agility, free meals, and a huge "tunnel" that only they get to use. It's ridiculous.

Meanwhile, we had out of state HS tournaments for our girls team and had to drive individually b/c we didn't have the budget for a bus.

In FCPS? You should talk to leadership. We have transportation for boys and girls teams. In fact, they got a bus so the football team could go to support the cheerleaders for a competition. Really nice to see them there to support the mostly female squad, who cheers for them every week.

Gym space shouldn’t be an issue in the fall. Boys and girls basketball are held in the same season, with three teams each. Volleyball should be able to work it out. Anothet option is to hold girls volleyball in the spring when there are no gym sports.

All sports follow VHSL rules and guidelines. FCPS can’t just move things around or change things if they want to abide by the league.

The idea is ludicrous. Adding another boys sport---that is incredibly unpopular such that local rec leagues don't even offer it--is just silly. They are required to have parity with the girls' sports. Find your kid a boys volleyball club to play for (do those even exist)?

I have 3 boys in MS and HS and have never heard of any of their friends playing volleyball. It just isn't popular enough to justify adding.

If they are going to add anything, it should be freshman soccer for boys and girls. That would actually be popular.

Just because your kid doesn’t play volleyball doesn’t mean other kids don’t play or want to play.

Well, then start advocating for another girls team as well. My vote would be for girls flag football. Lots of new leagues popping up.

I would be totally fine with that. Unlike some people, I would support other sports and clubs my children are not interested in or cannot participate in.

Not having a strong boys volleyball youth league, in my opinion, is not a good reason not to start a high school programs for this sport in fcps. Many kids are lucky to start playing a sport for the first time in high school. Our high school’s field hockey, girls volleyball, cross country, tennis, wrestling, even girls basketball teams have a lot of athletic newbies join the teams. Unlike football, volleyball is a sport that can be played later in life. The idea of cutting freshmen football might be a good idea.

Haha.

Someone is pushing to replace football with mens volleyball in high school?!?

Can't these parents or better yet, the students themselves, create an adjacent but non-VHSL mens volleyball team in their schools?

We have several sports like that in our high school: dance team, ice hockey, rifle team... Heck, the kids started an ultimate frisbee team for our high school that plays against other high schools in the area.

Why not do the same with mens volleyball?

Or if you really want it to be a sanctioned sport, you need to start with VHSL. All the recognized sports in FCPS are governed by VHSL. If you want mens volleyball to be a sanctioned "official" FCPS sport, and not a student/parent run club sport, you probably need to start with VHSL.
