Should we reach higher than UVA?

As a math major ?

As any major, your kid needs at least 3 schools in each category. And you must be honest with the definitions of Reach, solid chance/target and safety.
Do that, show demonstrated interest at each school, put 100% effort into all the supplemental essays (Why school X?), and your kid will likely get into 5-6 schools (all the target and safeties) and possibly 1 or more reach.

If you need 3 safeties, they aren't really safeties.

You get that was a joke, right? Math major, 10 schools, listed 9

Target is UVA, fall back WM, safety VT. I
I've heard that UVA is hyper competitive so I figured that was a reach. But as the submission dates get closer I'm wondering if we could reach higher.

My kid got into Brown and Dartmouth with those stats (don’t ask — I know they are polar opposites) and chose UVA

I would reach higher, but I wouldn't consider WM a fall back or VT a safety. One of DS's friends (class of '22) was accepted at UVA and rejected by VT. Younger DS's friends (class of '23) seemed to see a lot of WL movement, so they were generally pretty happy where they ended up, but it was hit-and-miss for a while. It is a crap shoot these days, so don't count any chickens.

Nah, males have a much easier time getting in to W&M

Nope, VTs acceptance rates are higher overall--even for engineering. And W&M has higher average GPAs and SAT scores (with more students submitting scores).

There's a world outside of VA

With a 4.4 as a junior from NOVA, WM isn’t a fallback in RD unless you are at TJ. ED, yes. But not RD. Sorry, but my DC (class of 22) had several friends in the 4.4 range who wanted UVA and assumed WM was a given in RD. Spoiler alert: a couple were accepted, a couple were rejected outright. One was WL and offered spring admission.

A man’s reach should exceed his grasp, or what’s a heaven for?

Sure, aim for Stanford. Your kid isn’t getting in, but why not apply?

If you are looking outside VA then finances become a factor. Run the net price calculators to see what you can afford. Our kids didn’t like UVA so applied out of state but it worked with our finances. I would also look for a rolling admission safety. Those VA schools are not safeties.

Where does he want to apply to? I mean you should have some realistic options and safeties and then add whatever other schools he likes.

So you got a 690 in verbal? Probably need to go test optional to all 3 and apply to others.

All excellent schools. But if UVA is in-state and your kid likes it, those others are all very expensive (unless you'll get decent FA).

This is probably the right answer, that's where we started out a year ago, looking at in state public schools. Major is undecided, which might work better at WM. Looking at the percentages on the common app it seems like it would be fun to roll the dice a bit more but we'll be happy at any of the top VA schools.

I think your analysis is spot on but also why not look further afield? You never know.
