I agree. Who would want to go to school in most of the South when the North has so much to offer... I'm not sure why they haven't split already...

What a great parent you are, so open minded and not controlling at all of your ADULT college student.

For those who aren't afraid of your kids being exposed to peers from a different part of the country who might've been brought up with different values, Alabama is a fine school, probably on par with UMass-Amherst or UConn. But way more fun - check it out on a fall Saturday (Roll Tide!) if you don't believe me.

UConn is # 58, UMass in the 60s, and Alabama is 170. But keep telling yourself what a stellar fun school it is.

A free ride to Alabama makes a lot more sense than paying for U Conn. those rankings are meaningless.

Trying to keep an open mind since she values a warm climate and it would be great to be able to bump college $$ to grad school. Wouldn’t hurt to apply but be sure to visit before making any decisions!

We recently toured. DS also has a nice scholarship package and is a minority. We were blown away with the university. I would strongly suggest you visit so your daughter can make a better informed decision. Before the visit, it was the last school on list, now is high.

DP. What other schools are you guys considering? Could you also share your kid's stats? We had it on our list originally but when it dropped to 170, we kinda took it off. Based on stats, DS will be able to get in and some money, but we were worried about the other aspects - quality of education, social aspects (we are Asian and while DC is quite social we don't want him to feel isolated). Appreciate any more detail you can share..

You should visit. I think you’d be pleasantly surprised.

In strictly academic terms, it's just a terrible school.

You sound so open minded --- NOT. You do realize that people are allowed and even encouraged to have opinions in our country.

Not about different opinions at all. Regressive and harmful laws cannot be argued around.

Adult child, huh? Is she paying for college on her own? No? Yeah, we still have a say. Same reasoning we just had to explain to her when the vehicle she has been driving unexpectedly crapped out and we were debating ditching it, getting me something newer and having her drive my van

Where is your evidence?

If she is high stats I definitely recommend she apply for Honors College. Like most large universities, you get out of it what you want to . Bama is so much more than blonde sorority chicks and football. Definitely visit the campus and reach out to your admissions rep - they will set you up for a VIP tour where she can meet professors for her major/department, meet honors students, tour dorms, have a meal with a dean, etc., etc. There is a lot to be said for free tuition, especially if she is considering graduate school. Bama is >65% OOS so there a ton of kids NOT from the South who go there. It is a blue campus in a red state. There is also a lot of diversity- 23% is NOT white. On our random visit last April, there was a Black Student Union performance, a table from the Bama Hillel, and an LGBTQ+ table all set up outside the student union. We were really impressed by that. DS was accepted there (we are from northeast), we know several people who go there (also from NE) and they have all had great experiences there. He has not committed yet as he is waiting to hear from more schools, but it is in his top two.

Lots of other schools that might be a better fit have similar financial aid programs. Check out U of Kansas, Iowa State, U of Nebraska, U of Oklahoma.

Yes but on this site, pointing and shrieking at the South never gets old.
