University of Alabama

The financial packages for high stats and National Merit kids at the University of Alabama are pretty incredible. And the warm weather would appeal to my child. Does anyone currently have a daughter or son at Alabama who could speak to 1) the academic rigor and opportunities there in science; 2) and/or what it might be like there socially for a liberal Northern female with little interest in Greek life? Thanks!

Have a dear friend who sends their daughter there. She is thriving with great internships and great financial package. She is in greek life. The liberal thing may be an issue because no one there wants to be political. It seems the liberal kids want to make politics everything and your daughter may not like this FWIW my friend would be described as a moderate and ditto her kid but they admitted they daughter wanted a break from 24/7 politics.

No one's going to touch this one after the last thread, sorry, OP.

Our friend's kid from the NY metro area who is Chinese-American (kid born in US, family has been in the US since the Cultural Revolution) was so miserable there they let her leave after the 1st year which was unusual for that family since they tend in general to have a strong 'you commit, you stick it out' philosophy. She had a pretty bubbly, extroverted personality in high school, and was a strong but not top student-- she found the classes not to be very challenging and the social atmosphere very stifling. She really seemed damaged by the experience, though she's now doing okay at an East Coast school.

She sounds difficult.

College towns tend to be pretty liberal, and with big state schools, there are so many students that a large portion of them don’t have anything to do with Greek life.

Don't comment about things you don't understand.

You sound white.

Don’t worry, white libs also collapse onto the fainting couch at the thought of going to school in Alabama because they are also “difficult” (ie psychologically fragile).

White people of both political stripes are pathetically fragile. You don’t see Asians tearing their hair out over Happy Holidays.

My kid turned down the same offer (NMF/NMS), but we are Asian.

It was free for my NMS but they had no interest in Alabama or U of Alabama and thankfully had other options. However, for a conservative leaning child interested in sports, parties, sororities and fraternities, its a fun place. I'm sure focused students can manage to get decent education as well.

My liberal northern kid took a free ride from Auburn and liked it.

That tells you how long you’ve been pathetic. Besides your orange god made a word salad the other day trying to complain about this.
