I live in the south and my Indian friends go to the beach for most of their vacations, when not visiting family.
They visit Hilton Head, Rosemary Beach, Hawaii, Bermuda, Puerto Rico, Mexico, cruises etc. |
| The ones I know spend a lot of time visiting their relatives in India/Pakistan, going to Europe, and the Middle East. They like going to Niagara Falls and national parks but not so into the beach. |
That’s what my 75 yr old Indian parents do (Niagara falls/national parks). Not really the thing to do for the younger generation. |
| My wealthy Desi family members (in-laws, my side of the family is not wealthy or Desi) go on cruises and stay in the cabins with the private pool and butler. Maybe they'll go to NY, the Boston area or the Hamptons. They usually keep quiet about their vacations because they can be extravagant but I'd love to hear about them anyway. Just because we can't travel like that doesn't mean I don't want to hear about it! |
I saw several Desi families on the beach in Chatham this summer. |
Was there this summer and it's still true! |
| I have been to Niagara Falls at least a dozen times, not entirely by choice. Every group of visiting relatives has insisted on seeing it. And then they want to visit Hindu temples all over the place, like there’s a shortage of them in India. |
+1. We did it once and that was enough. I don’t particularly like to be places in the US with little to no diversity. Add to that that we have to cook all week or drive a distance to different restaurants and I don’t know why anyone, brown or not, would go there. We do like the beach, though. Hilton Head, Delaware beaches. We have learned that 3-4 days is enough. We can’t do a week at the beach. |
| Jammu and Kashmir. |
| Empty Space in Kanada! |
I had to laugh at this one, but yeah, if there is visiting friends/family, they still want to go to all the famous touristy places, including Niagara Falls and NYC. For vacation, we have been to Maldives, Portugal, France, Venice, UK, Singapore, Thailand, Malaysia, Argentina, Brazil, Uruguay,... I think that's probably it for the recent ones. I was born in India and came here as a teen, and am not really a beachy person. However, I love to snorkel, and I want to learn to scuba, so that's on the agenda for next summer. My daughter loves the beach and is practically a fish, but is more interested in water sports. Next year, we'll do a little travel in the country visiting family (New Mexico), and probably some place like Belize, or maybe one of the islands. It just can't be one of those lie on the beach and catch some sun type of vacations, it has to involve snorkeling/scuba. Every time we go back to India, we will swing by Maldives. That place is paradise. |
My parents came to visit us for the first time when we were still living in an apartment. Mom's bedroom window opened opposite a community swimming pool. Every day, a blond woman would lie down to sunbathe from morning till evening, and she never actually got in the pool to swim. My mom observed her for a few days and told me that she felt svery sorry for that poor woman because she is either an orphan or someone who has run away from home! Me:  How do you know that, mom? Mom: Only a parentless, depressed and clueless person will lie down in the sun to get heatstroke!! LOL. |
