150k household of 1 is barely making it

There is zero chance that someone who spends like this knows what they are spending their money on. Troll troll troll.

Anonymous wrote:$500 a month on "gambling and entertainment" on top of eating out twice a week, streaming services and vacation?? That's excessive.

+1 has to be a troll.

No one said $150K was rich, but you are definitely UMC compared to the rest of the country.

Do you think MC people are eating out 2x week, going gambling?

Also, our grocery store bill is more like $1100/month for a family of four, and this is with two teens. How on earth are you spending $800 for groceries, especially when you are eating out 2x/week?

You need to learn to budget better.

This is insane. And I make about 50k more and I'm single. I've found that I've had more than enough for the majority of my working years.

I mean, you cut back gambling, clothes shopping and a few meals out and you literally save $10k.

Is that how boomers think all youngins are wasting their money? Can't afford a down payment because they spend $6000 on gambling and $6500 on avocado toast?!

You have a spending problem. Eating and ordering out are killing you along with too many new clothes.

We are a family of three (single mom, two college-aged kids) living in DC on a HHI of 110k.

We're a family of 4 doing it too--in Fairfax.

+2
Single mom and one kid in college in Montgomery County doing OK on $103k

I'm a single parent with an 18 yr old and I live just fine on around $83k. You are spending way too much OP. My son's friends are wealthier and they seem to have almost unlimited spending financed by their parents. They order food nearly every day plus Starbucks, etc. They go out to each a few times per week. They buy pretty much whatever they want- shoes, expensive clothing, trips, etc. These kids grow up and if mommy and daddy stop paying for this, they end up like you. Cut all of the extra crap (ordering food, going out to eat, clothing, etc) and get a second job since you are single and have no reason not to.

Lord. I make a bit more than this...base around $196k but its MORE than enough to live a very nice life. My take home is $10k. My rent is $3160. I save over $2k per month in addition to my 10% 401k contribution. I still pay on student loans, have a personal trainer, therapist, and I still have way more than enough money to have $600k+ in savings and get most everything I want (within reason). You are doing something very, very wrong if you are barely getting by on this money.

It's more than enough for someone without a gambling and spending problem.

Anonymous wrote:OP the fact that this is your budget is why you only earn $150K. You’re stupid. Take that $12K a year in gambling and vacation + cancel all but one streaming service = $2000 + stop ordering and eating out (you are eating dinner out or ordering essentially every night!) = $3600 + $2400 and only buy occasional clothes = $600 total = >$20K a year you could invest. Every year. After 5 years that’s a downpayment.

Or you could keep spending everything you earn and be on here in ten years still complaining about how life is so unfair and you can’t afford DC anymore.

STFU with this bullshit. For one person, $150K is something like top 5% of all full-time workers.

You’re overspending, OP. That’s why you feel poor. It’s not rocket science.

Funny we live very well on that amount and plenty of savings. Reduce your food costs, travel less, less on entertainment, less on services, less on car payments and you would be great.

All the bolder stuff are extras that launches you in UMC category. And your 200 bucks for clothes? It is excessive and should be covered under the miscellaneous category of $500 a month.

You have $21k left over. After 5 years that's $100k left to save for whatever. So 2 new cars or a downpayment. Why do you even have a car payment.
Anonymous
You're spending $1,340/month on food????? For one person???

You are insane, OP

On your list, you could reduce a lot, save $15-20k a year, and still live comfortably. You are out of your mind.
