Baltimore Private School for HS Girl

The ones that have heard of it know it because of riding lessons or camps.

My friend’s DD will start in the fall. Very generous merit aid, love the IB program and the international flavor. Just bc you are unfamiliar with it does not mean it is only for girls who ride horses. Sheesh.

They put IB programs in poor schools in Northern VA. Most people would much rather have plenty of AP classes than an IB program. Maybe the IB is what draws the international kids but they are full pay and don't need AP credits.

My DS did full IB at St Paul’s (Baltimore). Excellent program- he felt classes were much stronger, at least with regard to writing, than the APs he took as freshman and sophomore.

I have a good friend who works in college admissions at a top-30 university. I asked him about his impression of the IB curriculum since I wasn’t familiar. He said kids who do well in the IB diploma program are very well regarded in college admissions.

More and more, the AP program is being exposed as a racket. Kids encouraged to take the classes/tests because colleges will look favorably on it, which I am sure is true, but then the top schools often don’t allow the classes to count toward credit, which has always been the College Board’s big selling point. They just keep piling up the $$$$ and your kid is back in Calc I even though he took AP Calc.

Do IB classes in HS mean you get college credit?

Just to provide a differing viewpoint, the only local kid I know who attended Saint Tim’s got expelled from her day school. It’s being overhyped here for some reason.

My DD went there. I don’t know about overhyped as much as clarified: the people say it is just for people who like horses have no idea what the school is.
We had a great experience there and my DD has never been on a horse in her life. Good kids from all over the world.

The only give I know who went there was a snob that nobody liked. She and her family just thought they were better than everyone else. Maybe the international crowd was attractive to them since they could make themselves into something they're not and those girls wouldn't know the difference.

Perhaps so, but the campus is literally filled with grazing horses. A family member of mine went there (my generation) and it was literally all about the riding. She later transferred to a local day school for a more academic experience. My dd has a friend who rides (class of 2023 so recent) who considered transferring to Saint Tim’s specifically for the riding but ultimately stayed put

We all know that bulking up on full pay international students is how struggling private schools stay in business (Garrison guilty of this a bit as well lately). Maybe Saint Tim’s has improved its academics to lure this cohort but it isn’t somewhere I’d recommend over Bryn Mawr, RPCS, SPSG, Mcdonogh, etc . .

So if Oldfields is staying open, who will go there? I thought they recommended their students go to GF or McDonough. Who will teach there? I’d imagine if my school was closing, I’d be applying and interviewing at other schools right away.

Not sure what is going on re Oldfields. If the money isn't there, something has to give. From the little I know it's mainly a suit over who controls the disposal of the school assets.

The head of the school was poorly chosen and didn’t know how to run a school. Likely was getting a big finders fee for selling the school.
