I understand your point but I can’t help but think the anti-crime politics of the mid-90s led to an overall reduction of people getting thrown in jail.

Word was out - you commit a crime you’re going to prison for a long time. Probably made more than a few people on the edge reconsider a life of crime.

Early 2000s until the anti-racist, anti-police COVID era were some of the safest in America. I don’t think it’s a coincidence.

It worked by imprisoning a generation of Black men. Did that solve the overall problem? Nope. Here we are again a generation later.

Agreed. Also, there won't be a criminal record or lengthy prison term ruining the lives of the kids who were killed in the crash of a carjacked car, or the 12 year old with 8 prior carjackings who was killed in self-defense by the gun-wielding off-duty security officer. Those kids won't have any records. They're dead. Had they been held responsible for their crimes (especially the 12 yo carjacker) and not left to roam the streets uncorrected, then they might still be alive.

Actually, we can put all the criminals in jail, and whatever generation they're in will be fine. This is a country of 300 million people -- there's no "destruction" from putting a small percentage of them in jail. But there is "destruction" from letting them roam free and continuing to terrorize other people.

Do the crime, do the time. I don’t care if you’re 12, 14 or 30. If you’re old enough to take a life, then yours should be behind bars. Soft on crime policies in progressive run cities is what is ruining America.
