This is very unusual. Usually AP Physics 2 is done after students finish AP Physics 1. AP Physics 2 covers more topics but the class moves faster because students have already completed a year of AP Physics 1 which gives them a strong foundation. I’m curious how many students take this combination (AP 1 and 2) double period Physics class at Poolesville. You would need an effective and experienced teacher to pull this off successfully |
Wheaton PP here. Kids in the engineering and bioscience magnets taken AP physics 1 in ninth grade. DS then signed up to take AP Physics 2 senior year, but there weren’t enough takers so they put all the kids who wanted a second year of physics into AP Physics C where they covered both Mechanics and E&M. He took both Mechanics and E&M AP exams. To the PP who asked how they have time for this, he took these in 9th and 12 grades. In between were honors bio and honors chem in 10th, AP bio double period in 11th, then AP Physics C in 12th. Calc BC was 11th so he had foundation in calc before Physics C and then MVC in 12th. Wheaton has awesome math and science teachers BTW. |
I don't know about school specifics, but in general the college board doesn't recommed APP1 or 2 as a prerequisite for C |
They typically do 1 and/or 2 for non-STEM majors or C:Mech and/or C:E&M for STEM majors |
Our school (BCC) only offers AP physics C or IB physics. Is IB more like AP Physics 1 and 2? Otherwise it seems like there isn’t an option for a bright kid who doesn’t intend to major in a science. |
IB Physics SL is more like AP Physics 1 and 2. |
Not sure whether it is SL or HL. It is a two-year course. |
Looks like it is HL: https://www2.montgomeryschoolsmd.org/schools/bcchs/academics/aphonors/ Is that similar to what the AP Physics C course covers? |
Another Wheaton family here and more love for the math, science, and engineering teachers. Only addition to the PP is noting that AP Physics C requires Calc BC as a corequisite. Wheaton has a lot of kids that knock out BC calc in 11th grade and then take multivariable calculus and Physics C. At Wheaton, Physics C is a single period but at other schools it’s a double period. |
IB Physics 1&2 is a two year course and students can test either SL or HL. The first year is basically equivalent to AP Physics C-mechanics and IB students in Calculus can usually take the AP exam junior year and do well. (E&M content is end of 1st year, after AP tests, so kids would have to wait to take APC-EM). The second year of IB Physics covers more topic than AP Physics C. |

My mathy kid took physics c: mechanics in 11th and physics EM in 12th.
He took BC Calc in 11th while taking physics C. He had never taken a physics course before. Math is intuitive to him so he didn’t find it difficult. |

AP Physics 1 has no prereqs and is taken insead of Honors Physics. Either honors or AP 1 is a prereq for the calculus based courses.
My kid took AP Phys 1 sophomore year (instead of honors) and took the others senior year. They were not double period, but many people take the two calculus-based courses at the same time during junior or senior year. |
So BCC kids in this class can choose whether to take it as SL or HL? Is the only difference in the exam? |
